ich bin gerade auf eine Webseite gestoßen, die soweit ich weiß im
Rahmen der FSFE noch keine Beachtung fand, was ich hiermit ändern
möchte. :-)
Konkret geht es um die Startseite des freien Chromium-Browsers [1], wie
sie zumindest unter Debian im Paket "chromium-browser" voreingestellt
ist. Diese Startseite verweist gleich zu Anfang auf die folgende
ziemlich gruselige Einführung in das Web:
"20 Things I Learned about Browsers and the Web"

Auf den ersten Blick handelt sich um ein sehr liebevoll gestaltetes
Werk - von den Illustrationen her genauso wie von typographischer
Seite aus. Der Schreibstil ist allgemeinverständlich und an Web-
Neulinge gerichtet, die Illustrationen sind sogar dezent animiert.
Man könnte fast geneigt sein, dieses seinen Eltern oder Großeltern
zum Lesen zu geben. [2]
Inhaltlich ist ebenfalls viel Richtiges dabei. Es wird grob erklärt,
wie das Internet funktioniert und welche Rolle Browser spielen. Einiges
wird konkret am Chrome erklärt, doch es werden im gleichen Atemzug auch
stets die anderen Browser erwähnt. Beim Thema Sicherheit fällt besonders
positiv auf, dass hier komplett auf das Marketing-Gelaber der Antiviren-
Industrie verzichtet wird. [3] Auch das Thema Privatsphäre wird anhand
von Themen wie Cookies ganz gut beleuchtet, mit Vor- und Nachteilen. Ja,
man könnte hier fast eine Leseempfehlung aussprechen.
Doch schon ab Seite 7 wird klar: Wo Google draufsteht [4], ist auch
Google drin. Das Kapitel "Cloud Computing" ist alles andere aus
ausgewogen, sondern eine Lobesrede auf alle Dienste, die die eigene
Festplatte überflüssig machen wollen. Das erscheint angesichts neuster
Entwicklungen besonders absurd. [5] Das nachfolgende Kapitel "Web Apps"
ist keinen Deut besser. In diesem beiden Kapiteln findet man, im
Gegensatz zum Rest, keine Spur einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung.
Nach diesen Kapiteln kommt dann wieder lesenswerter Inhalt.
Das ist wirklich schade, und irgendwie auch gruselig: Mitten in so
vielem Guten plötzlich so ein firmenpolitisch motivierter Dreck.
Der erste gute Eindruck täuscht hier leider gewaltig.
Ich möchte somit dazu aufrufen, diesen Text nicht weiter zu empfehlen,
vorallem nicht an Einsteiger. Und falls doch, dann mit ausdrücklichem
Hinweis auf die Probleme dieser vermeintlich hervorragenden Einführung.

Zur Info:
Das Schweizerische Bundesamt für Informatik und Telekommunikation
feiert in der neuesten Ausgabe seiner "Kundenzeitschrift" Eisbrecher
die Migration der Rechner des Bundesverwaltungsgerichtes:
"...den Roll-out von 430 neuen Windows-7-Clients und bedeutete den Wechsel
von einer Open-Source-Plattform zu Microsoft-Produkten." [1]
Während viele Konzerne zu Freier Software wechseln, migriert der
Staat der Bürger (in einer direkten Demokratie) zu unfreier Software...
Im Kanton Solothurn, der sich im Desktop-Bereich ebenfalls von der
"Linux-Strategie" verabschiedet hat, kommen die kritischen Stimmen
auch von Parlamentariern der grünen Partei.
Es ist zu einfach, dies an Parteigrenzen festzumachen.
Thomas Woodtli (Grüne Partei Solothurn):
"Die Grüne Fraktion begrüsst sehr, dass der Regierungsrat in dieser
Angelegenheit gehandelt hat, wobei
auch in unseren Augen wahrscheinlich etwas zu spät. Schon oft wurde im
Saal von Linux und seiner Crux
gesprochen. Meistens wurden aber die Finanzargumente angeführt und man
versuchte uns immer weis-
zumachen, dass Linux an und für sich ein sehr günstiges System sei,
eine Aussage, die für mich auch mit
einem Fragezeichen besetzt ist. Die Kosten eines solchen Systems sind
für uns Grüne nur die halbe
Wahrheit. Viel wichtiger scheint es uns, über ein System zu verfügen,
welches mitarbeiterfreundlich ist
und die Arbeitsbedingungen der Benutzer erleichtert." [2]
Ich denke wir müssen dem Bürger noch besser klar machen, wie und
warum er die Freiheit verliert, wenn er sich auf unfreie Software, SaaS,
Cloud-Computing, Electronic Voting etc. einlässt und warum er freie
Software verwenden soll.

882 software patents, likely related to GNU/Linux, in the hands of
people who could use them to pressure Free Software companies and
developers? Maybe in the hands of Microsoft, which has for years used
nebulous patent claims to extract licensing fees from companies that use
the Linux kernel in their products. This month the German and the US
competition authorities approved the sale of those patents to CPTN, a
consortium consisting of Microsoft, Oracle, Apple, and EMC. But, barring
nasty surprises in the still to be published detailed decision, we
neutralised the danger for Free Software.
Software patents are a very complex matter, and competition authorities
are not used dealing with them. So beginning from December 2010 we
explained to the German competition authorities why the patent sale was
highly problematic. In our first[1] , and second[2] submission we
explained the mechanics that some companies use to compete in the
software market, and how they preserve their monopolies.

In their press release the authorities have not only highlighted the
importance of Free Software for competition, and that actual patent
lawsuits are anticompetitive but also that threatening with patent
lawsuits, like the fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) strategies from
some non-free software companies, can be anticompetitive.
So for the first time, competition authorities have acknowledged the
essential part of Free Software for competition, and that patent
lawsuits by dominant market participants can be anticompetitive. This
will also be important for future debates, when the behaviour of big
non-free software companies has to be evaluated from a competition law
perspective.
As the devil is in the details, we hope to hear about the exact wording
of the CPTN contracts to evaluate them[3] . Such work is very time
consuming, and we would not be able to keep track of those activities,
without the support of one time donations[4] and regular ones by our
Fellows[5] .

To date, 17 percent of the public institutions, we contacted[6] ,
already replied and removed the non-free PDF reader advertisements from
their websites. The current progress of the campaign can be seen on our
buglist[7] . Until now we have only received one negative reply.
However, as about 83 percent of the contacted institutions have not
responded yet, we want to remind them about the letter we have sent, and
ask for a reply. This works only with your help. To take part, follow
the actions from our follow-up guide[8] . In short this is:
