I would be interested to know what hardware choice you make, in fact.

(I have been looking at low-power desktop solutions, but I am now starting to 
think that various embedded/industrial computers that might have been viable 
once upon a time are now likely to struggle with the bloated Web experience 
and GPU-heavy desktop effects bonanza imposed on us today.)

I don't have any such experience, but I did just encounter the following
