My lunchtime news browsing encountered the "Adelphi Charter":
http://www.ipcharter.org/
It's discussed in the following articles:
http://education.guardian.co.uk/higher/comment/story/0,9828,1591467,00.htmlhttp://www.economist.com/business/displayStory.cfm?story_id=5032375http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4348970.stm
The following is an excerpt from the Gaurdian article which might
be a useful point to apply when arguing against "the US has
such-and-such a IP law and is very successful, therefore the EU
should have the same law".
"The USA's database industry has flourished without a database right.
Indeed on most measures, it has outperformed the European database
industry. The same is true of the so-called "broadcaster's right," of
marginally shorter copyright terms and so on."
Malcolm.

Hi there.
I happened to be at a talk / book launch last night at the Cultivate
Centre in Dublin:
http://www.sustainable.ie/cultivate/
I hadn't heard of them before, but the introduction before the talk
mentioned their concerns with "sustainability" and made me feel
that Free Software might be there kind of thing. In fact, I searched
their site and discovered:
1. They screened Revolution OS in 2003
2. They are offering an "intership" developing their IT stuff:
http://www.sustainable.ie/cultivate/internships.htm
which explicitly uses Free Software tools. I think we should make
contact but, before e-mailing them out-of-the-blue, I thought I'd
see if anyone on the list is involved with them.
Incidently, the topic of the talk was Buckminster Fuller:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckminster_Fuller
What a complete madser!
Good luck,
Malcohol.

Informal announcement, not yet at the "please forward around" stage, just
FYI.
On the morning of Friday November 18th, 10am to 1pm, MEP Proinsias De Rossa
will be hosting an anti-swpat event, organised by IFSO, in Dublin city
centre.
That much is sure, the following is fairly-sure but can be changed:
De Rossa will open with a quick presentation of how the Directive looked
inside the parliament. Someone from the IFSO committee will give an intro
to IFSO and FS. I'll give a talk about the wins and failings of our work
which culminated in the rejection of the Directive. We're planning to fly
in another speaker to give a swpat-related talk. And it will all end with a
panel-style Q&A session.
At some point in the middle there may be a coffee break.
The venue will hold around 60, so we won't need a big crowd-building drive.
More details during the week.

October 10, 2005: Open Source Agreed In UN Information Society Summit
Preparations
Encouragement for the use of free and open source software and open
standards for science and technology has quietly worked its way into the
draft texts being prepared for the November second phase of the World
Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).
Such ideas have gained significant support in recent years as
potentially low-cost, easy-access solutions for developing countries,
but as they are put forward in the WSIS context they are balanced by
stronger calls for proprietary approaches.

Hello,
I would like to organise a discussion on copyleft in Galway and am
wondering if somebody from FSF Ireland would like to take part?
Also I have recently wiped Windows from my computer and installed Ubuntu
Linux and not being a tech head I have been running into a few problems.
Is anyone on this list familiar with debian\ubuntu and based in Galway
that might be able to meet up and give me a few tutorials ?
