Where on Slashdot did this get published? I was able to
find it in a search, but other than that the story seemed to
be invisible.
Also, can anyone explain the 'ripped-up-the-pope-bald-chap?'
bit?

Well, we made it onto gnu-friends.org, lwn.net, newsforge.com, and
slashdot.org. Front page of the first two, and somewhere on the others.
We've been visited by 194 unique IPs and their still coming in.
The first IFSO meeting will be this thursday, all details the same as
our previous meetings: http://ifso.info/about.html
(all welcome, no membership or notice required)
Todo :
* Get someone to draw the logo
* Get final paper work done for bank account and ifso.ie domain
* Get back to work on the patents issues (I think I've said that before)
* Agree on a press release
* Talk about an FS in education project (or was it charities? Glenn?)
* Start accepting memberships[0] (committee at a minimum. yes?)
* Take some photos[1] (can anyone bring a digital camera?)
* Talk about the first annual IFSO conference
* Everything else
* plus the usual editor, language, desktop, and mua wars
[0] We should have a bank account on friday or monday, so I guess these
can stay in Glenns pocket until then? We need a receipt book.
[1] some mugshots and/or a photo of a meeting would make IFSO look a bit
more real and a bit more human, and new folk could recognise us for
meetings.
...and GNU Robots: a brilliant programming game I found. So good that I
have to mention it somewhere. package 'gnurobots' on Debian, and I
think on RedHat also, and probably most/all distros.
You write a program in scheme (not complex), the little robot starts off
in a maze and runs your program. There are baddies, food, and prizes.
The game isn't elaborate, but it's brilliant and addictive.
http://www.gnu.org/software/robots/
Read the docs, it's all dead simple. My current robot is at:
http://www.compsoc.com/~coriordan/software/fourbot.scm
but he's not very good, so I'll bin him soon and write a mapper bot.

Hi,
http://ifso.info/membership.html says:
> Membership fees can be paid in person to any committee member, or by cash transfer to our bank account in Ireland. Paper receipts are available for all in person transactions. Bank account details will be posted here Real Soon Now.
1. I'm not too sure if it's a good idea to post the bank account details
on the site; I remember being advised against it some months ago by a
bank ... but I don't often work on 'e-commerce' sites ?
How about:
"Please send cheques payable to 'Irish Free Software Organisation' to:"
2. Do you think it's a good idea to get a Post Office Box for this and
general purposes ?

There's also an associated wiki (follow link at top left), if anyone
wants to add further comments/additions.
Hi all,
Tomorrow (Jan 5th) is the 20th anniversary of the GNU project, and
will be the launch date of IFSO.
We have a website at http://ifso.info/
Could people take a look and point out mistakes, problems etc?
Also, I've listed IFSO contributors on ifso.info/people.html. This was
done in a rush off the top of my head, so please send me additions,
corrections, etc.
I'll be working on the website tonight, and there is plenty of clean
up work to do, but we'll be announcing it some time early tomorrow, so
send as many emails as you'd like to me or to the list. I mightn't have
time to reply to them all but I'll read them all.
Todo: some sections of the site were copied from my homepage, so I'll
reread them to make sure they are respectable, remove references to "I",
etc. but send me mails about anything at all, in case I miss one.

For any list members that have been living under a rock, or have ignored
all list posts right up until this one:
Irish Free Software Organsation has been launched.
The site is at: http://ifso.info
If you've contributed to projects on this list, check
http://ifso.info/people.html and send me a mail if you're names not there.
Please pass on an annoucement to other lists and websites. Multiple
submissions to slashdot wouldn't be a bad idea.
I'll still be making corrections to the site during the day, so keep
sending bug reports.
Here's a sample announcement that I think covers everything that makes
the launch news worthy:
January 5th 2004, Irish Free Software Organisation[0] (IFSO) is
launched. Since June 2003, members of the fsfe-ie[1] mailing list have
been collaborating on issues such as software patents[2], and the
European Copyright Directive[3]. With Ireland holding the presidency of
the EU for the next six months, political lobbying in Ireland will be of
increased importance. The fate of the software patentability directive
is still undecided, and we now also have the Intellectual Property
Rights Enforcement Directive[4] to deal with. In the coming months, we
also hope to work on spreading education and adoption of Free Software
in Ireland. By no coincidence, today is also the 20th anniversary of
the beginning of the GNU project[5].

Happy whatever-you-celebrate!
For anyone interested in attending FS conferences in 2004, there are six
good ones that I know of:
FOSDEM - Belgium - 21 & 22 Feb
Libre Software Meeting - France - July?
FSF Associate Members Meeting - Boston - mid-march?
AFFS Conference - UK - May?
GNU/Linuxtag - Germany - July?
IFSO Conference - Ireland - ???
FOSDEM : fosdem.org
"Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting"
This is mostly a developers meeting, but fsfeurope will have a booth and
FSF have held their "Award for the Advancement of Free Software"
ceremony at fosdem for the last three years, so it will probably be
there again. Free addmission, donations requested.
This trip can be done quite cheaply. I got my flights from ryanair
yesterday for 70euros. The bus from the airport to the city centre is
an additional 10euro each way, and accomadation is 25-65 euro depending
on how posh you are. I think there was free accomadation last year in a
nearby hall (bring your own sleeping bag), but this gets snapped up
quickly.
Libre Software Meeting (LSM/RMLL)
For politically interested folks, this is probably the world #1 FS
meeting. It's not yet decided what part of France it will be held in
this year, or what date. Free addmission, I think.
FSF Associate Member Meeting
In 2003, this was held on the 15th of March, in MIT, Boston. It's a
great way to find out who works for/with FSF. Everyone wears stickers
with their name & email address, so you'll quickly recognise people
you've only talked to by email & mailing lists.
Membership required: member.fsf.org
AFFS conference
This was a one day event in 2003, held in May in Birmingham. By
flying out in the morning and back the same night, this trip can
easily be done for less than 100euro and is a good way to meet up with
our nearest neighbours. Membership required: 10 pound sterling
GNU/Linuxtag
I don't know much about this one but the fsfeurope folks say it's
great. Held in Germany, addmission unknown.
IFSO Conference
The cheapest trip of all. Details not decided. Possibly in Trinity,
possibly in April/May. I don't know. Membership required: 20 euro.
hmmm. that's all. Depending on cashflow, I hope to be at the FOSDEM,
LSM, AFFS, and IFSO conferences.
All the above conferences are community-run, or non-corporate, or
whatever, except for [GNU/]Linuxtag which is a trade show.

I took a look at http://www.entemp.ie/whats.htm to see if there were any
changes. The entry about the Information Society Directive now ends:
"The Consultation Period has now closed (22nd December 2003)."
Good luck,
Malcohol.
