Liebe Freundinnen und Freunde der Freien Software!
Es gibt ja bekanntlich viele Wege, Freie Software zu unterstützen und zu fördern, wobei die aktive Benutzung gemeinhin als der wichtigste gesehen werden kann.
Leider ist es gerade im Bereich der gemeinnützigen Vereine so, dass es wenig bis gar kein Budget und – noch viel wichtiger – kein Know-How im Bereich der technischen Infrasktruktur gibt. Solche Organisationen arbeiten in vielen Fällen mit sehr alter Hardware, auf der dann Windows XP oder dergleich läuft und verwenden Google Mail, Google Docs oder andere Clouddienste, wodurch oftmals sensible Daten an wenig sichere Orte gelangen.
Das Technische Bürgernetzwerk Austria [1] (ein 2012 gegründeter gemeinnütziger Verein) hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, zumindest letzteres Problem zu lösen. Das TBNA stellt daher seinen Mitgliedern (die sich aus gemeinnützigen Vereinen, aber auch Privatpersonen zusammensetzen) eine Infrastruktur für E-Mail und Netzauftritt (und bis zu einem gewissen Grad auch anderweitigen Dateiaustausch) zur Verfügung, die vollständig auf Freier Software basiert. Die Organisation obliegt drei Fellows der FSFE aus Wien, wobei einer die allgemeine Organisation innehat und zwei die Systemadministration in ihrer Freizeit machen.
Derzeit betreibt das TBNA einen gemieteten Rootserver in Wien, der allerdings von der Hardware her gewissen Einschränkungen unterliegt. Kürzlich haben wir aber dankenswerter Weise eine einmalige Spendenzusage von €1000 bekommen, um uns ein Upgrade auf bessere Hardware zu ermöglichen. Da wir dieses Upgrade nachhaltig gestalten wollen, wären aber einmalig ca. €1400 notwendig, wobei €130 der Differenz schon zur Verfügung gestellt worden sind. Wir würden dann das Geld, das derzeit in den gemieteten Rootserver fließt, in das Housing für den neuen Server, der dann aber Eigentum des Vereins (und damit noch stärker unter unserer Kontrolle) wäre investieren, sodass die laufenden Kosten sich nicht änderten.
Der derzeitige Plan ist, einen 19-Zoll-Barebone von Supermicro mit einem Achtkern-Atom zu kaufen und mit entsprechend RAM und Festplatten auszustatten. Damit wären auch Spenden in Form von Hardwareteilen möglich. Dies hätte für Selbstständige den Vorteil, dass sie (aufgrund des Anschaffungspreises dieser Teile unterhalb der Grenze für geringwertige Wirtschaftsgüter) die Kosten bereits im ersten Jahr vollständig steuerlich absetzen könnten.
