Während die Diskussion über ein neues Urheberrecht für die Generation Internet gerade erst an Fahrt aufgenommen hat, zeichnet sich am Horizont bereits eine neue Debatte ab, bei der die aktuellen Interessenskonflikte von Internet-Nutzern und Rechteverwertern wie ein simples Vorgeplänkel wirken.
3D-Druckverfahren versprechen Lösungen für viele Bastlerprobleme und Wartungstechniker. Eine Digitalkamera plus entsprechender Software und schon beginnt der Drucker den Ersatzteil auszudrucken. Bereits heute gibt es Vorlagen und Konstruktionspläne aus dem Internet herunterzuladen. So wie das Internet Handbücher und Gebrauchsanweisungen in gedruckter Form überflüssig gemacht hat steht durch den 3D-Druck eine Revolution in der Lagerhaltung für Kleinteilen und Accessoires ins Haus.

Zahlreiche rechtliche Untiefen im Zusammenhang mit 3D-Druck verunsichern jedoch Kreative bei ihrem Versuch mittels dieser neuen Technik neue Anwendungsmöglichkeiten zu finden. Gerade in der Technik sind viele Teile patentiert. Patent und Gebrauchsmuster schützen eine technische Idee. Hier geht es anders als beim Urheberrechtsschutz nicht darum, dass man ein fremdes Werk nutzt. Im Prinzip können nämlich auch komplette Eigenentwicklungen fremde Patente verletzen.
Wer nur für den Heimgebrauch nachbastelt, sollte das derzeit allerdings noch sorgenfrei tun können. Im Unterschied zum Urheberrecht schützen Patent und Gebrauchsmuster den Rechteinhaber nur vor der gewerblichen Verwendung seines geistigen Eigentums.
Im Rahmen des qTalk am 30. April 2013 versucht Georg Markus Kainz mit seinen Gästen Bernhard Kubicek, Reprap Vienna, Johannes Patzer, CTO von lithoz, und Medienkünstler Herbert Gnauer einen Blick in die Zukunft, die diese neue Technologie verspricht, zu werfen. Bernhard Kubicek wird auch 3D-Drucktechnik zum Angreifen präsentieren.
