Hallo *,
ich benötige ein USB Modem für den Laptop bei Fahrten in Österreich. Jetzt gibt es ja wirklich genügend Data-Angebote, auch halbwegs brauchbare Angebote was die Tarife angeht, da sehe ich weniger Probleme (bin aber natürlich für ein "Finger weg von... weil!" jederzeit offen :-) )
Allerdings brauche ich dazu ja noch ein USB-Modem und ich habe einfach so überhaupt null Erfahrungswerte was derlei unter Linux angeht.
+) Gibt es USB-Modems die ihr ganz besonders empfehlen würdet? +) Bestimmte Hersteller, die als grundsätzlich recht unkompliziert unter Linux gelten? +) Oder ist das alles heute sowieso kein Thema mehr und alles tut einfach?

ich geh davon aus du meinst UMTS? (bei modem ohne angaben denk ich immer no an analoges telefon...)

also ein n9 funktioniert recht gut... ansonsten: aus gruenden des empfanges is natuerlich auch zu ueberlegen ein internes zu verbauen, wenn moeglich...die lenovo dinger tun soviel ich weisz.
erfahrungen hab i leider keine mit zZ verfuegbaren.

wenn die hw geht, ja.
allerdings: ich kenn genuegen modems die ma regelmaessig ein & ausstecken muss weil sie sich intern einfach aufhaengen zB, ... erfahrungsgemaesz laufen sie oft (wenn sie laufen) unter linux besser als unter win*****, da die hersteller hier relativ crappy sw ausliefern. (ich hatte scho mal ein model wo die gui laufen musste damit der treiber funktioniert....)

Ich hab hier diverse Modems herumliegen, davon kann ich auch gern mal welche herborgen wenn Du damit herumexperimentieren magst. Konkret sind das alles Huawei-Modems, und zwar: E398, E182e, E1750, E270, E169

Also aus Sicht freie-Software kann ich da wenig dazu sagen, AFAIK haben sie alle eine proprietäre Firmware. Bei den älteren Modellen hängt sich das Modem auch ab und zu mal auf, bei den neueren Huaweis ist mir das eigentlich noch nicht untergekommen. Vom Protokoll lassen sie sich mit den AT* commands genau so wie analoge Modems ansteuern, funktionieren also im Wesentlichen ohne spezielle Treiber.
Die meisten Modems müssen allerdings vorher erst in den passenden Modus geschaltet werden, was mit dem Programm usb_modeswitch passiert. Eine Liste mit den unterstützten Modellen gibt's hier: http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/device_reference.txt

Kein Thema ist vielleicht übertrieben, aber ein Großteil der Modems geht. Der ganze Verbindungsaufbau geht bei aktuellen Distros auch automatisch (bzw. ist im Gnome Networkmanager drinnen), man muss im wesentlichen nur ein paar Zugangsdaten und den APN eingeben.

Das 'Huawei E353' z.B. hab ich bei einem Kollegen in Betrieb gesehen unter GNU/Linux. Problematisch bei Huawei (und vermutlich auch anderen Herstellern) ist, daß nicht immer genau dieselbe Hardware hinter derselben Bezeichnung steckt.
