Italian e-govt investment and aid

Hi, An article in the International Herald Tribune says Italy is going to spend a lot of money seting up e-govt at home and in developing countries. Italy pushes e-government http://www.iht.com/articles/53307.htm Since the minister responsible is ex-IBM, and IBM are pushing "Linux", there may be an opportunity to make this a GNU/Linux based project. I'm in the wrong place, (and I don't speak Italian) can someone else take on the task of lobbying the Italian govt on this? That's not the only contradiction though and this is why they had to explicitly state that the GPL is compatible with this "definition". But what can you expect when you write "guidelines" and then change the name to call them a "definition" ?-) The key here is to understand that this "definition" is really a set of "guidelines" to help you figure out if a license is Free Software. As long as you keep this in mind, you're safe. You need a lot more background material to figure if a license is Free Software. Trying to speak about "logiciel libre"

Surfing the net to get some references to put into an article about free software I was writing for my web page, I've been on the site of opensource.org. I was surprised to notice that on the French translation of their definition of open source software (version 1.9) they translated the term "open source" as "logiciel libre", wich is the exact translation of "free software". This is not the case - for example - on the Spanish translation which is "Código Fuente Abierto". For the Italian version it is even not translated. Pointers: English: http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.html French: http://www.opensource.org/docs/osd-francais.html Spanish: http://www.opensource.org/docs/osd-spanish.html Italian: http://www.opensource.org/docs/osd-italian.html Most of the time in France we do not translate the term if we want to refer to "open source" but we may say "logiciel libre" to refer to "free software". The exact translation of "open source" would rather be "sources ouvertes", but we do not use it. I prefer to speak of "logiciel libre " to refer to "free software" (see the "we speak about free software campaign"). But if the "official translation" of "open source" is also "logiciel libre", it will be a bit harder for French free software supporters to explain people what is the difference (if any) between those 2 concepts and why on term should be preferred to the other. gnu web site and JDOM license : Compatible with GNU GPL ?

Dear All, We have looked around the JDOM license. http://cvs.jdom.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/jdom/LICENSE.txt?rev=1.8&content-ty… We are trying to finger out if the license is compatible or not with the GNU General Public License. The "promotion" clause is optional this is a good point. But regarding the point 3 and 4. This could be a restriction to a distribution (so to user freedom). Is there an "official" statement regarding the compatibility of JDOM license with the GNU General Public License ? (Maybe to add that on the gnu web site ?) Hi, recently I've heard somebody say that for software patents you need to submit the source code and therefore make it public. I'm rather convinced this is not right. Could somebody point me to some simple examples I can give, so I have more to backup my statements? Thx, Wim

In france, people who insist on speaking about Open Source use the english word. I've only rarely heard people using a french translation of Open Source (sources ouvertes). We often face people talking about Open Source but using the word Logiciel Libre. This is confusing and we try to fix their mistake. The usual answer is : this is my idea of what Logiciel Libre is and who are you to claim that it is otherwise ? T-Shirts(?)

Hi everyone, Thomas Templin just visited me and volunteered to evaluate the possibility of printing HURD T-Shirts in time for the LinuxTag in Karlsruhe (given that the HURD team finishes their design draft in time). Another thing we've been thinking about was whether we should maybe open a second line of FSF Europe t-shirts, for which some feedback would be welcome. Some ideas would be: a) Logo¹ on front on the left chest about hand size, GPL preamble on the back. b) "Europe on the GNU" on front, FSF Europe Logo¹ centered over the shoulder blades. c) Only Logo¹ on front on the left chest about hand size. Sweatshirts may also be a possibility. But then they should preferrably be minimalistic, I guess. So what about: * Logo¹ on front on the left chest about hand size. Proprietary software can compete on every other aspects (quality, efficiency, reliability etc.). The only realm on which proprietary software will never compete is ethics (social and moral value) and taking advantage of this is building a long term asset. I have a long term experience (started in 1988 ended around 1998) of a large french company seduced by the quality and efficiency of some Free Software. After ten years a proprietary software vendor managed to convince them that their software was better in this respect. I very much regret to have introduced Free Software in this way at the time.
