Web Zoekmachine Van Het Publiek, Voor Het Publiek: YaCy 1.0
Het YaCy project brengt versie 1.0 van haar peer-to-peer Vrije Software
zoekmachine uit.
YaCy gebruikt geen centrale server. In plaats daarvan komen de
zoekresultaten uit een netwerk van momenteel 600 onafhankelijke peers.
In deze opzet van een gedistribueerd netwerk bepaalt geen enkele
entiteit wat er in de resultaten staat, noch in welke volgorde
resultaten getoond worden.

De YaCy zoekmachine draait op de computer van elke gebruiker. Zoektermen
worden gecodeerd voordat ze de computer verlaten.
Dit is anders dan bij conventionele zoekmachines. YaCy is ontworpen met
het oog op de bescherming van de privacy van de gebruikers.
De gebruiker's computer creëert een individuele zoek-index en relevantie
scores, zodat de resultaten in het verloop van tijd beter overeenkomen
met het gewenste resultaat. YaCy vereenvoudigt eveneens het bouwen van
een aangepaste zoek portaal. Het vergt maar enkele klikken. 

"Op het Internet bevat het meeste wat we doen een zoekopdracht. Het is
de essentiele link tussen ons en de informatie die we zoeken.
Voor zo'n vitale functie, kunnen we niet op een paar grote bedrijven
rekenen, terwijl we onze privacy ondermijnen", zegt Michael Christen,
YaCy's projectleider. "YaCy's Vrije zoekmechanisme is de vitale link
tussen Vrije gebruikers en Vrije informatie. YaCy geeft de regie over de
zoekopdrachten terug aan ons, de gebruikers."  

Iedere YaCy gebruiker maakt deel uit van een groot zoeknetwerk. YaCy
wordt al op sites als sciencenet.kit.edu, yacy.geocaching-portal.com, en
fsfe.org gebruikt om binnen de sites een privacy respecterende
zoekfunctie te bieden. Het bevat een peer-to-peer netwerk protocol om
zoekindexen uit te wisselen met andere YaCy zoekmachines.

"We willen van het idee af dat diensten centraal beheerd moeten worden. In plaats daarvan, realiseren we hoe belangrijk het is om onafhankelijk te zijn en om infrastructuur op te zetten dat geen 'single-point-of-failure' heeft," zegt Karsten Gerloff, voorzitter van de organisatie Free Software Foundation Europe. "In de toekomst zullen zoekmachines zoals YaCy een vitale bouwsteen zijn in de wereld van gedistribueerde peer-to-peer systemen."

Gebruikers kunnen deel gaan uitmaken van YaCy's netwerk door de software op hun eigen computers te installeren. YaCy is Vrije Software, dus kan iedereen het gebruiken, bestuderen, delen en verbeteren. Het is op dit moment beschikbaar voor GNU/Linux, Windows en MacOS. Het project is ook op zoek naar ontwikkelaars en anderen die willen bijdragen.
