Thanks for that! Do you mind sharing some sources of your research?
I've had a discussion with a colleague a few days ago about the
security of having both factors on the same device. I couldn't find
good articles backing my point in the remainder of the lunch break.

Because of the difficulties you described I switched to GLS Bank a
bit more than a year ago. They still allow banking with a TAN
generator and the chip on the maestro/debit card. It was a bit bumby
to activate the account without the app (which seems to be their
default as well) but the problem could be fixed with a short phone
call and everything is fine since then.

However, if they ever decide to stop providing this method, I don't
know what else to do, so this still concerns me. 

Ideally, there would be some regulation in place making it mandatory
for banks to provide an alternative to (proprietary) apps - or make it
possible to do banking without a smartphone.
