So do mailing lists, blogs, chat systems, other social networks
like GNUSocial, Mastodon, Minds, Hubzilla, Friendica, ...

The difference is the cost of each of them.

Cost of FB is that:
 - What you publish can only be read using FB software
   (so you end up pushing your friends to join it)
 - What you read using FB software is decided by FB
   (lots of advertisement)

Cost of alternatives:
 - Some of them are harder to use (not mailing lists?)
 - Your friends are all on FB ...
