Re-read my sentence, I have in no way said that they should limit
themselves to cover costs.
Realize that the difference from Joe Public and theater chains is that
with theaters you can actually negotiate how much you want out of a
movie to let them have it in time and perform it.
To my knowledge most movies do cover their cost and make a hefty profit
just with the theatrical release. I think that a more lax copyright law
that has no power on non-commercial use (including copying) of the work
would not affect this situation at all.
