and I'm disappointed by more non-free-software discussion on FSFE's
list, but I would point out that usually you cannot convince an insane
person to undergo psychotherapy by telling them they need one.

Show the absurdities of not revealing the source.  Then encourage them
to reveal their LaTeX sources, but shackle it to unremovable adverts
and poison pills, in line with FDL's goals.  I'd expect over 90% of
academic publications would be happy as adware.
