You appear to be using a Thunderbird-based mail client.  Tagging is
one of the features of Thunderbird promoted on
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/features.html
but I can't find more info to see whether it can add text as well as
colour.  If not and you want it, sending in a feature request may
help, or you can lead its development yourself.

The gmail-using OP probably can only send in a feature request,
though.  Such are the limitations of using non-free software.

Which reminds me: I'm currently using Heirloom mailx over IMAP for
lists and patched it to display arbitrary headers (such as list-id) in
the summary. I'll tidy and resubmit the patch if anyone wants it.
