food data

Hi,

I'm trying to get hold of data on food composition  (like the American 
USDA data at
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Data/SR18/sr18.html  , but European).

This is because the UK government requires payment of a license to use 
such data in programs, making free software using this data impractical 
(eg. a program for diabetics to assess carbohydrate  intake).  I would 
like to know if other European countries have a more sensible policy.
