I selected the UK keymap when asked and can type ÄÖÜäöüß quite
easily.  çáàâé etc too.  The AltGr with [, ], ;, ', = and # "dead
keys" make it not too painful.   What is not fun is trying to type
Czech with everything still setup for Latin-1.
