Hi all,
The European Social Forum is a meeting place for social movements in
Europe. On September 17-21, ESF will be held in Malmö, and more than
20.000 people are expected to participate[1].
I think FSFE should be present with an information stall[2] at this
years forum. Many of the participating organizations are likely to be
morally aligned with FSFE, but may not have the necessary insight into
technological matters to be aware of our cause. The cheapest stall
(informational only) costs 80 euro.

Dear Core Team Members of Germany (Alexander, Karsten, Joachim, Rainer,
Michael, Matthias, Werner, Bernhard) and Sweden (Mathias, Jonas, Henrik,
Christof),
I am writing to invite one or more of you or someone you would recommend who
might be appropriate to join me and a few other academics at a workshop in
Helsinki to discuss copyright and privacy issues. The workshop is part of an
academic conference organized by the International Society for the Study of
European Ideas and co-hosted by the University of Helsinki.
We are looking for a few more participants to fill out the workshop and
would prefer to have those be European because of our desire to develop
cooperative relationships with other international colleagues. We are
building a new center: CSTEP-Center for Science, Technology, Ethics and
Policy, and are currently building it around some key phenomena in the nexus
of technology and ethical research and practice. This is necessarily a
global endeavor and so we would like to develop relationships with other
like-minded folks who are working in similar directions and on similar
issues. For example, we already have a working relationship with the
3TU-Centre for Ethics and Technology in the Netherlands. Here is the address
for CSTEP: http://cstep.cs.utep.edu/index.html
We are a very new Center and so the site is a bit rough yet, but it is
coming along as are our plans and projects. To further our initiative, we
have set up this Helsinki workshop which will take place on the morning of
July 29th at the University of Helsinki under the auspices of an
international Conference with the theme: "Language and the Scientific
Imagination".
Here is the conference website: http://issei2008.haifa.ac.il/
To find our workshop, go to Section V and look for "Control + C, Control +
V: the ethics of copying" I've attached a copy of the advertisement to this
email message. Again, part of our initiative is to develop working,
cooperative relationships with other international colleague who are
interested in areas having to do with emerging technologies and ethics.
If you are interested in joining us at the workshop and the abstract that
you submit is appropriate and acceptable, we would be able to cover the cost
of registration for the conference (but not travel or hotel). If you are
interested, please send along an abstract to me. If you are not, I would
appreciate it if you could send along this information to your colleagues
since, as I mentioned, I would very much like to have one or more other
European philosophers or computer scientists or interested intellectuals
involved in the workshop.
If you have not yet been to Helsinki, I've been told that it is a beautiful
place to visit at the end of July. By the way, I have targeted members in
Germany and Sweden simply because of my personal history (having studied for
3 years in Deutschland) and because Sweden is geographically near to
Helsinki.
all the best,
Jules
We currently have 4 participants, two computer scientists and two
philosophers:
Jules Simon, ³Control + C, Control + V: the ethics of copying²
(University of Texas at El Paso)
Steve Roach, ³Internet Privacy or: Whose hands are in the Cookie jar?²
(University of Texas at El Paso)
Wayne Patterson, ³Plagiarism: A Mapping to the Binary, the Discrete, or the
Continuum?²
(Howard University)
Mark Neuvon, ³What's so intellectual about intellectual property?: a
philosophical debate over the ownership of ideas"
(University of Helsinki)

Hej!

Dear Sirs,
I am a writer with two books behind me and working on a third,
which will be about Penelope at Ithaka, i e trying to understand
thoughts in ancient history. I have found the picture below at
Wikipedia which I would like to use on the cover of my book
(which is still a future project). It will not be changed in any way!
"Olive tree on Ithaca, Greece, that is claimed to be at least 1500
years old.

license document, but changing it is not allowed."
I have in mind to copy the full blue text between quotation marks on
the cover. Am I allowed to use the photo within the terms your
organization-demands, and free of charge? I also have a bit of a
problem of who the copyright holder is, as two alternatives are given:

years old. Photo by Channel ®, june 2006.
I will greatly appreciate your answer, and hope you will forward this
mail to whom it concerns within your organization.
Best regards,
