Giovedì 18 novembre, Bill Gates, chief software architect di Microsoft, aprirà a Milano il "Futurshow 3004" e successivamente parteciperà all'incontro "Innovare per crescere", organizzato da Assolombarda.
La Free Software Foundation Europe e la comunità italiana del software libero da sempre incentivano e sviluppano innovazione tecnologica nel campo informatico, e per dimostrare che è possibile raggiungere l'eccellenza tecnologica senza ricorrere a un uso aggressivo del diritto d'autore e del regime brevettuale, promuovono una libera distribuzione del sistema operativo GNU/Linux al pubblico.
Inoltre, giovedì 18, dalle ore 9.00 alle 11.00, presso l'ingresso Carlo Magno della Fiera di Milano, esponenti del Sources Switch[*], organizzazione che si riconosce nei principi del software libero e che organizza attività pubbliche ed esso dedicate, diffonderà CD contenenti la distribuzione "Ubuntu GNU/linux", un sistema operativo completo e liberamente copiabile e modificabile.
La Free Software Foundation Europe invita il Ministro della Ricerca Scientifica e il Presidente di Confindustria a considerare il software libero come strumento cardine per la promozione dell'innovazione tecnologica e di un'industria italiana dell'ICT protagonista, e non spettatrice, delle dinamiche future.
Le comunità scientifiche più prolifiche sono quelle più aperte agli scambi. Isaac Newton è riuscito ad elaborare la teoria della gravitazione universale solo perché "stava sulle spalle di giganti", nella Cambridge ricca di biblioteche e vivacità culturale.
Nel campo informatico, "stare sulle spalle di giganti" significa avere la possibilità di studiare liberamente soluzioni e algoritmi realizzati precedentemente. Distribuire software senza diritti di uso, studio e modifica, di fatto ostacola l'innovazione in questo campo. Al contrario, il software libero garantisce tutti questi diritti agli utenti, assicurando al contempo la libertà commerciale ai produttori di software.

La Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) è una organizzazione non governativa senza fini di lucro che si dedica a tutti gli aspetti del Software Libero in Europa. L'accesso al software determina chi può far parte di una società digitale. Quindi la libertà di usare, copiare, modificare e redistribuire software, come descritto nella definizione di Software Libero, permette parità di partecipazione nell'era dell'informazione. Portare all'attenzione del pubblico questi temi, dare solide basi politiche e lagali al Software Libero e assicurare libertà alle persone supportando lo sviluppo di Software Libero, sono temi centrali per la FSFE, che è stata fondata nel 2001 come organizzazione sorella della Free Software Foundation statunitense.
