Hello,
The redesign with better usability for pdfreaders.org which we did during the workshop yesterday is attached.
Feel free to use the parts of it you feel fit. Note that there are changes just in the index file (navigation, intro text, table, footers etc). Look at the source.

What do you think?
I do not have time at the moment to deal with all the translators. I would like to concentrate on the other campaign. We could suggest Otto that he can get in contact with the translators. But to be honest I am absolutely fine with the current solution. And until now not many people complained about it.
Best wishes, Matthias

I would like to evaluate and discuss the proposed changes before committing them. But I don't have that much time right now.
We could just postpone the discussion for a month, what do you think?

No problem for me. Can you inform him about it?
Best wishes, Matthias

Hi Otto,
just wanted you to know, that we are postponing discussion about the interface a little, since we are all very busy. However we hope to evaluate the proposed version before christmas.

Ok, thanks for the notice!
Hejssan,
Any update on this? I put my suggestion also online at http://otto.kekalainen.net/pdfreaders/index.en.html The changes are a quick hack, so don't copy the ugly code, just the ideas about better usability and a easier to understand message.

hi Otto,
sorry, I have a lot of other tasks at the moment. And thanks a lot for the feedback.

This is my personal opion. Have not yet spoken to Hannes, Henner and Stian about it.
I do not see the huge advantage compared to what we currently have. There is not less text. There is one paragraph in a footnote which was before in front of the table. And there is "Recommended for your OS!" under the suggested readers (which is think is not absolutely necessary).
The first page from your draft promotes international standards. But we want to promote Open Standards. So I think a lot of the message will be lost (because people will not follow into the more detailed pages).
I like it that there are no "Read more" links... but I would not have the time at the moment to coordinate with all translators.
Best wishes, Matthias

There isn't meant to be a huge advantage - it's just an small increment in a more user friendly direction. The devil is in the details..
There is not less text. There is one paragraph in a footnote which was
Sure there is less text. In the current pdfreaders.org there are 147 words before you get to the table (which is what users actually look for). In my version there are only 53 words.
before in front of the table. And there is "Recommended for your OS!" under the suggested readers (which is think is not absolutely necessary).
In general, I don't think it is a good idea that visitors need to remember a paragraph of text in order to use the table. If the "help" text is where the visitor needs to know it (on the green background), then there is less cognitive stress..
The first page from your draft promotes international standards. But we want to promote Open Standards. So I think a lot of the message will be lost (because people will not follow into the more detailed pages).
The text you read is a suggestion made by Sam that was voted to be the best text at the workshop in FSCONS. I liked my version more, so I switched back to it now. I e.g. use the term "open standard", so I think you might like my version better also. (view the source to see both versions)
I like it that there are no "Read more" links... but I would not have the time at the moment to coordinate with all translators.
OK, I'll continue to wait...
