Hi there,
On the last page you have said that there may be some patents held by some companies, is it possible to list the companies and or their patents so that people can work to have those patents killed off.
Thanks,
Chris.

(Beside that I would reply that software patents are bad and we should get rid of the system instead of fighting an endless fight against specific patents.)
I would like to know: Do we have the list of patents and companies?
Best wishes, Matthias

We know about the arithmetic encoding used in the J2BIG encoder. AFAIK it is Mitsubishi (along with some other companies) who owns that patent.
Anyway, I doubt about the usefulness of making such a list, simply because we could never be sure it is complete. There are secret patents, and most of the published patents are so complicated that even its creators would have problems to determine to what they apply.

No, we don't. And I believe it's all very hypothetical, in that, just like with software patents, the patent system is a mess and there is no way of knowing from where such potential patent threats could come. Jose mentioned Mitsubichi as one of the possible patent holders, and I assume he'd be the best one to ask, but also he was very hesitant to mention specific patents and patent holders.

We know some of them. But we do not think it is useful to make such a list. It will never be complete. There are secret patents, and most of the published patents are so complicated that even its creators would have problems to determine to what they apply.
That is why FSFE puts is energy into fighting software patents at all. See http://www.fsfe.org/projects/swpat/swpat.en.html, and http://www.fsfe.org/projects/ipred2/ipred2.en.html.
Best wishes, Matthias
