First of all I'd like to mention that the whole topic needs further thought from myself, so my suggestions are probably not production-ready and should be taken as a draft only or to brainstorm about them :) I think it could work like this (as you've already and similarly aptly mentioned): * one could consider certifying the basic building blocks of the hosting company's platform itself. "Is the hardware, the firmware and the OS level libre?". This as a basis/first step for a successful certification * further extend this to the actual service, as you've mentioned. A certification could be valid for e.g. an email service or virtual private servers Furthermore a certification could include the systems that usually run in the background at the provider, such as provisioning and invoicing systems. I'm not sure if that would be practical or necessary. Although I personally believe that it should be necessary to include *all* parts of software. Softening rules about that would only attract ISPs who don't care about freedom in software. In my opinion and now that this is available for everybody, libre, unblobbed & microcode-update-free firmware (such as Libreboot) should be included in the certification process if we free software enthusiasts want progress. I don't think we'd want "just another hosting provider" who uses widely available free software building-blocks, but to extend this down to firmware and later on, when available, to the hardware level (="open" hardware). While the latter is still a very good thing to do, we can do more today already. Currently there will be a minimum of compromise involved. That being said, a certification should always reflect a work in progress and needs to go with time and the technology available, without creating _too_ many obstructions. If we're lucky, we'll soon have an actual piece of free hardware available (TALOS), which I've mentioned earlier. I believe that you're in contact with Timothy Pearson who's in charge with this project. Take software that uses a free software license already, for example Libreboot, Trisquel GNU/Linux, Apache... this should be an easy task because it shouldn't be necessary to check every revision or even not at all. It's already free software and licensed as such. We could rely on the FSFs definition what a free license is or create an adaption, which I think isn't necessary in general but _I_ prefer not to link to the FSF whenever I can because I identify myself more with the FSFE than with the FSF. That being said, the work is already done by the FSF, so why do it again :) For parts of the software that isn't licensed at all, e.g. some in-house provisioning systems, this would need further thought. I'd understand a provider who says that they don't want to give away their "secret-sauce", even though I'd also say that it would be a wrong way do run a business with a strong emphasis on computing freedom. There's already a lot, if not the majority, of "secret-sauce" in configuration of software (take postfix for example).
