I am Jehan, a GIMP developer.
You may have heard about the issue of Sourceforge taking away the old
GIMP account on their platform and adding an intermediary installer with
adwares (looking like it comes from upstream), which hurts the GIMP
project and its users.
Well if you haven't, have a look at gimp.org.
ArsTechnica did an interesting coverage:

Their answer is basically to propose us to take back control of the
account, and force us to update it. Thus return to square 1, when we
used to use Sourceforge as our official repository, and we certainly
don't want that. Even without the adware installer, we are fed up with
their ads (people used to click the ones looking as "download" button
and think that GIMP embedded malwares because of these!). And we
certainly don't want to be special treated as well with exceptions made
to our account. We want the platform to either come back to good
behavior (not an easy task) for everyone, or be treated and known as
what it is right now: an undesirable and unrecommendable website which
spreads malware.
This is why I am proposing to federate Free Software organizations for a
public open letter as an answer to their proposition. We are a small
team, and just by ourselves, we have a little weight (enough for raising
news interest) but not that much and we need help. We could, if we
wanted to, just "resolve" the matter for us and get to an agreement with
Sourceforge. But many of the GIMP devs don't want it done silently this
way. We want things to get better for every software which still uses
Sourceforge out there.

P.S.: I took on me to write this email after a discussion on IRC where
several of the GIMP members expressed a wish to federate with other

I'm sure this bug slipped in with good intentions, but hey, it would be so
much nicer to fix the bug and improve the digital quality of service to
everyone who visits that page.
