To whom it may concern, My name is Tadhg Murphy and I am writing to apply for an internship with FSFEurope. Having a keen interest in free software and its promotion I would love the opportunity to work with FSFEurope. Interest and enthusiasm will only get me so far though, but I have the qualifications and experience to be of real use to FSFEurope. I hold two degrees, the most significant of which is an MA in International Relations. My MA thesis was written on cyberactivism, the use of the internet in political campaigns, as well government reactions to it. During the course of my research I gained a high appreciation of the value of free software in our society, especially with regard to democracy, transparency, and indeed security. In light of the mass surveillance occurring in our society promotion of free software is more important than ever, especially as proprietary software is vulnerable to pressure from various security agencies. In addition to my academic credibility, I also have significant work experience in this area. My most recent position was with GovFaces.com, a social media start-up dedicated to politics. There I was responsible for advising the company on data protection and security matters, notably writing the website's privacy policy <http://govfaces.com/en/privacy>. This important experience gave me a valuable insight into the digital work environment, particularly making me even more familiar with EU data protection legislation. This combination of enthusiasm, academic knowledge, and practical experience means I would be a valuable member of the FSFEurope office. Being a part of your team would in turn give me a valuable opportunity to help promote free software and gain important experience.
