Dear FSFE
I write to you on behalf of a member of the Joomla! community.
This person is based in Germany.
My question relates to the legal interpretation (in Germany) of the GPL
regarding the requirement (or not) to maintain a copyright notice/link
on the front-end of a web site for a GPL-licensed extension that is
used on that web site (that's built on the GPL-licensed Joomla! CMS
software).
My understanding has always been (and I believe it's also the general
understanding), that the GPL requires the copyright notices to be
preserved in the source code of the software, but that a user would be
free to modify the code to remove/hide a front-end credit link?
A lawyer who seems to specialize in Internet law, is demanding payment
from this person for removing (hiding) a front-end credit link on a web
site.
Are you able to provide any advice on this or point to an online
resource that gives clear direction on this?
Full details of the matter are available on request.
