== Help ons nu om te groeien en een verschil te maken in 2017 ==
Dit jaar vierde FSFE haar 15e verjaardag. 15 jaar hebben we gebruikers sterker gemaakt, gemeenschappen gesteund en aangedrongen op betere wetgeving. In deze 15 jaar hebben we gezien dat alle activiteiten, zelfs als ze op dat moment als klein werden beschouwd, groot kunnen worden als we samenwerken. Soms boekten we samen zelfs succes ten opzichte van de zwaarste lobby van grote belangengroepen. 15 jaar waarin we wisten dat dit alles niet mogelijk was zonder de voortdurende steun van onze gemeenschap, die duizenden uren van ons werk doneerden on ons financieel steunden. En als u deze nieuwsbrief regelmatig leest, ons werk u bevalt maar u nog geen lid bent van onze gemeenschap... overweeg dan nu om mee te doen met de FSFE!

== Russische wet stelt Vrije Software tot prioriteit ==
In het midden van oktober keurde de volksvertegenwoordiging van de Russische Federatie ("Doema") een wetsvoorstel goed dat Vrije Software op verschillende niveaus binnen de overheid van de Russische Federatie sterker zal maken[2]. Het vereist dat de publieke sector de prioriteit geeft aan Vrije Software boven propriëtaire alternatieven, geeft bij openbare aanbestedingen voorrang aan lokale IT-bedrijven die Vrije Software leveren en erkent de noodzaak om samenwerkng aan te moedigen met het wereldwijde netwerk van Vrije Software-organisaties en -gemeenschappen.
De wetgevers hebben zich extra ingespannen om zeker te stellen dat de taal in het wetsvoorstel correct is. De wet spreekt van "Vrije Software", noemt expliciet de vier vrijheden en gebruikt zelfs "GNU/Linux" om te verwijzen naar het meest verspreide vrije besturingssysteem.
Zoals onze beleidsanalist Polina Malaja het verwoordt: "Deze wet is een voorbeeld van publieke software-inkoop op de goede manier."
== Wat hebben we verder gedaan? ==
- Begin oktober vond de jaarlijkse bijeenkomst van de algemene vergadering van de FSFE[3] plaats. Op deze gelegenheid lukte het onze huidige Fellowship-vertegenwoordiger Mirko Böhm om de kluwen, die ontstaan was over onze ideeen om te beginnen met het evalueren van "Vrije Software"-bedrijven, te ontwarren. Het geniale idee zou zich kunnen bevinden in het niet evalueren van bedrijven maar in van hun activiteiten. Matthias Kirschner vatte de hele achtegrond samen in zijn blog "There is no Free Software company - But!"[4] en vraagt om feedback.
- Nadat we de politieke partijen die meedoen aan de deelstaatverkiezingen in Berlijn hadden gevraagd om hun plannen over het gebruik en de verspreiding van Vrije Software[5] en hen drie aanbevelingen hadden gestuurd om hen tot handelen aan te sporen (DE)[6], publiceerden we nu een analyse van de coalitie-overeenkomst van de nieuwe regering in de deelstaat Berlijn (DE)[7].
- Max Mehl rapporteert over ijzer en vrijheid en deelt zijn herinneringen aan OpenRheinRuhr 2016[8] dat plaatsvond in Oberhausen. De FSFE was goed vertegenwoordigd met presentaties door Max Mehl[9], Matthias Kirschner,[10] Erik Albers[11] en een internationale infokraam met Duitse en Nederlandse Fellows.
- Op 12 en 13 november was FSFE landteam Nederland[12] aanwezig met een kraam op T-Dose in Eindhoven[13] en organiseerde zij een Nederlandse teambijeenkomst ter voorbereiding op de aankomende verkiezingen in maart.
- Op 16 en 17 november participeerde FSFE's beleidsanalist en juridisch coordinator Polina Malaja aan de Open Source Summit 2016, die plaatsvond in Parijs, door er een presentatie te geven[14].

- Op 23 november hield Matthias Kirschner een voordracht voor de .Net- gebruikersgroep Berlijn-Brandenburg, waarbij hij een algemeen overzicht van FSFE's missie en projecten presenteerde[16].
- FSFE's uitvoerend directeur Jonas Öberg participeerde in een panel over vrijheid van panorama, auteursrecht, openheid en democratie in het Zweedse Linköping[17].
- De FSFE was met een kraam ook aanwezig op FIfFKon16 – in.visible systems[18] van 25 tot 27 november.
- Op 28 en 29 november participeerde Georg Greve, oprichter/eerste voorzitter van de FSFE in een panel met Europees Parlementslid Julia Reda[19] over de toekomst van Vrije Software in Europese instituties op DIGITEC 2016 in Brussel.
== Uit de gemeenschap ==
- FSFE's gemeenschapsbouwer Erik Albers probeerde een helpende hand te bieden door onze noCloud-leus[20] te lokaliseren met vertalingen uit de hele wereld. Met de wonderbaarlijke hulp van Olga Gkotsopoulou lukte de crowdsourcing en in onze wiki hebben we nu bijna 40 vertalingen in verschillende landen en dialecten, van Japans, Bretons en Arabisch tot Luxemburgs en Zwabisch[21]. Erik vatte deze activiteit samen en noemt manieren om nog steeds bij te dragen aan de noCloud- vertalingen[22]. We zouden deze vertalingen snel willen gebruiken om onze favoriete sticker aan te bieden in uw favoriete taal of dialect.
- Max Mehl schreef voor iedereen die werkt met de FSFE-website, zoals het webteam of veer vertalers, een gedetailleerde uitleg over hoe u lokaal de gehele FSFE-webste kan bouwen en daarna snel enkele XHTML- bestanden ook lokaal kan bouwen[23].
- Paul Boddie houdt een betoog over de verschillende gevolgen van computers in werktijd, op onze carrieries, onze ontwikkeling, onze vrije tijd en de mogelijke voldoening van het leven in zijn blog On Not Liking Computers[24].
- Tarin Gamberini biedt een overzicht van de derde waarneming na het aannemen van Vrije Software PDF-lezers binnen Italiaanse regionale overheden[25]: tien Italiaanse regio's hebben het aantal advertenties voor propriëtaire PDF-lezers op hun websites verminderd.
- Iain R. Learmonth schrijft over PATHspider-plugins[26].
- Daniel biedt ons een handleiding voor het direct via USB maken van een reservekopie en het weer terugzetten van data op Android- apparaten.[27] Hij deelt zijn kennis over het benchmarken van microSD- kaarten[28].
- In het kader van steeds meer Internet of Things-botnets begint Daniel Pocock een discussie over veiligheid van apparatuur voor thuis de draaien met GNU/Linux-gebaseerde firmware[29].

== Goed Vrije Software nieuws ==
Goed nieuws van overheden in Europa en de rest van de wereld: Hongarije heeft als doel om een standaard Vrije Software-gebaseerde pc desktopconfiguratie te creëeren voor alle ministeries en diensten van de centrale overheid[31]. Het parlement van het Spaanse Navarra heeft een motie[32] aangenomen die de regering oproept met een werkversie te komen voor een migratieplan naar Vrije Software-oplossingen. Frankrijk voegt broncode toe aan de lijst staatsdocumenten die vallen onder de informatievrijheidswetten[33], maar introduceert een nieuwe uitzondering als openbaarmaking een bedreiging zou vormen voor de veiligheid van de overheid[34].
Goed nieuws op Europees niveau: Een Vrije Software FIWARE-platform[35], gefinancierd door de Europese Commissie, creeert nieuwe IoT- mogelijkheden voor bedrijven. Het gezamenlijke onderzoekscentrum JRC (Joint Research Centre) publiceerde, als deel van haar actieve Vrije Software verspreidingsbeleid, Vrije Software over bosbouw en internetrisicobewustzijn[36].
In het kader van het transatlantische open data-partnerschap tussen de EU en de VS heeft men een nieuwe R-bibliotheek voor economische data ontwikkeld en gepubliceerd op GitHub[37].
En tenslotte: in 2016 draaide GNU/Linux op 99,6%, ofwel 498 van de 500 snelste supercomputers ter wereld[38].
