Sorry for delay in getting back with my mapping inquiries. I've been a bit preoccupied with other stuff - like installing 64bit Mint on this nifty HP laptop I bought from schtrade ;-)
Anyway, I quizzed Andy, the chap on OSM about various things - and got a very helpful and comprehensive reply.
However, I do need to dig a bit more regarding smartphone apps, for recording wayponts for subsequent logging of all the other things that people might do that are to be linked to that location (photographic, audio, video, literary, etc).
Interestingly, there is also a linked site called OpenStreetView http://openstreetview.org/ which hasn't really taken off - and you might be able to understand why when you see some of the initial efforts (close-up photographs of stiles and signposts is no use to anyone). I think the site could have possibilities - but only if it was treated more as a kind of artform rather than a repository for crap photos.

Thanks for the link. I guess that is more of an urban oriented site than we are looking for - but it could also be useful.
I'm sure Anna will explain the Amble Jam concept (it is still evolving :-)

However, I know we have to be careful over what we place directly on OSM - as, like wikipedia, other users might remove the data if it doesn't comply with either the "rules" or the general spirit of the site.
