More on Gopher
Sorry to keep mentioning this - but I still reckon it could be a handy service.
If you want to have a bit of a look around Gopherspace - then you can use the Gopher/http proxy at http://gopher.floodgap.com/gopher/
There is a handy list of sites to browse at http://gopher.floodgap.com/gopher/gw?gopher://gopher.quux.org:70/1/Software/...
As you will see, it is mostly a way to navigate directory structures. It was developed as a friendly alternative to FTP, with the added benefit of indexed searches. In the very early days of the web it was actually easier to find information via a "Veronica" searches across gopherspace than by using the crappy web search services of the day.
It could still be a handy way to store, index and distribute free software.

Not sure if I've already mentioned this - but what about running a Gopher server on the community machine?

I still have fond memories of using gopher 20 years ago ;-)
