HI Morag, nice to meet you! Amble Jam is in the early stages of
development. It is a day out in the countryside for nerdy folk. We
will follow a local authority planed walk, like the wizard walk at
Alderly Edge, take photos with GPS stamps, make digital art inspired
by things we see, Open Street Map it, etc etc. We are also hoping to
get the fantasy and science fiction writers from Madlab along to write
poems and short works based on places on the walk and then will put
the whole lot into a creative commons ebook, so people can download
the book, follow the route and stop to read or enjoy artwork on their
tablets as they go! Such fun!
Tell us about your loitering with intent gig :)
Best
Anna

Hi, have you seen this?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2013/apr/18/uncovered-error-george-osbor…
Much of the recovery plans and debt correction ideas were based on a
spreadsheet that has now been found to be in error due to a bad equation:
"The correction is substantial: the [original] paper said that
countries with 90% debt ratios see their economies shrink by 0.1%.
Instead, it should have found that they grow by 2.2% – less than those
with lower debt ratios, but not a spiralling collapse. Yet cutting
public spending to avoid that contraction has become a linchpin of
both George Osborne's and the IMF's policies."
"The focus now is on whether [...] politicians and bankers will stick
with programmes that are having dubious effect."
"The paper [...] came under scrutiny after [... the researchers ...]
released the spreadsheet calculations underpinning their model to
rival academics at Massachusetts University. The error was discovered
by Thomas Herndon, a PhD economics student at Massachusetts."
The rest of the article seems to be about people trying to claim that
the cuts are still vital and that the paper is only a little bit wrong.
This is, as far as I can see, pretty massive. Certainly a big case for
free access to data being part of our economics research methods. If a
phd student can spot an error, then chances are this error would have
been found almost immediately on the release of this data and we would
not be in this appalling position.

looks interesting. Its always been a bit second rate in terms of
features, and unstable sometimes too, but a bit of money could see it
right maybe? And kdenlive i don't think will ever port to mac and windows

Subject: [Mcr Girl Geeks] Learn about Open Source at UCubed 2013 - this
Sunday!
To: mancggd(a)googlegroups.com
UCubed 2013
Sunday, 21 April 2013 from 10:00 to 16:00 (BST)
Madlab 36-40 Edge St M4 1HN Manchester
UCubed is the Ubuntu and Upstream Unconference, an event is targeted at
users of The Ubuntu and Debian Operating Systems. The event is split event
into "User Space" and "Kernel Space" - User Space sessions are targeted at
people interested in learning more about Ubuntu and sharing experiences and
ideas, while Kernel Space is targeted at people interested in learning
about developing and distributing software for Ubuntu.
We have a small number of sessions already planned, but in true
unconference spirit, there will be plenty of room for sessions arranged on
the day.
There's a pay-what-you-want ticketing system in place (and donations will
be accepted on the day too, in case you want to pay a little more).

Hi, so it was bank holiday this month so we didn't have a meeting.
Shall we book in at madlab for the 6th.
Suggested items:
1) Fixing the group wiki up so we can add events and stuff
2) Planning the first Amblejam
3) Planning the video editing sprint and laptops install - we now have
four thinkpad laptops a our disposal for the summer.
Let me know what you think and I will book in etc.
Best
Anna
