Hello,
one year ago the Berlin Linux User Group (BeLUG, a non-commercial association) started a new regular event which is supposed to bring new kinds of (private) computer users in contact with Linux: the Linux Presentation Day (LPD)
http://www.linux-presentation-day.org/
The LPD has quickly spread across Europe:
May 2015: Berlin only November 2015: 72 cities in 3 countries April 2016: 110 cities in 10 countries October, 22nd 2016: 15+ countries expected
The LPD is a non-commercial event and (usually) free of charge for the visitors.
The main idea is that being part of a huge international event should both increase the motivation of potential hosting organisations and make it easier to get media coverage. Furthermore the event organising becomes a lot easier, of course.
There are recommendations but no strict rules what an LPD event shall look like. An important part of the concept is that it usually does not require a budget and can be done with very little effort. In the most simple case there are a few computers with different Linux desktop environments and a staff member for each of them so that the visitors can ask questions, let the staff show to them how things are done unser Linux and give it a try.
We have no contact to hosting organisations in Ireland yet and thus we are looking for both one or more hosting organisations and someone who coordinates the activities there (national web site, mailing lists, contact to national media). The hosting organisations in Germany currently include associations (mainly Linux user groups and hackerspaces), informal groups (small Linux user groups), companies (IT service), adult education centres, universities, and schools.
If
a) you as an organisation are interested in participating
b) some members / employees have a personal, private interest
c) you have an idea which other organisations might be interested
then I would be glad to hear from you.
Best regards,
(Mr.) Hauke Laging BeLUG board and central LPD organiser

This is a great idea and it's encouraging that it's spreading to more countries. I'm afraid, though, that IFSO don't currently have the resources to organise an Ireland instance of it. It might be worth getting in touch with the Irish Linux Users Group?
Hope it goes well! Best wishes,
Ben.
Hi guys,
Just chiming in to say I think there should be a broader awareness of this event online.
Do you plan to provide any digital content/coverage re: this?

which makes more sense after someone has said, "I'll do it" ;-)

There is not much digital content. There are the logo and the international web site. Furthermore there are the call for participation for the last event
http://www.linux-presentation-day.org/call-for/2016.1/
and the translation of the German press release
http://www.linux-presentation-day.org/docs/pm_it.draft-1_en.odt
But it turned out that it was "only" 110 cities because I counted the Italian cities on the wrong map... :-o

Hauke,
Your original email is not very clear. Your website does not do you any favours either. I would guess this is why you did not get a response.
Also you sent the same email to lots of mailing lists on the same day. Ireland is a small place. I would guess people interested in Linux would have got 2 or 3 copies that day, reducing the impact of the content and encouraging the mindset, sure someone else from the other group will reply. indeed. And kind of strange that this hasn't been done 10+ years ago...
I'm afraid, though, that IFSO don't currently have the resources to organise an Ireland instance of it.
Believe me, you do have them. I can say that without even knowing your situation. Several events in Germany have been organised by single people, not even backed by a LUG.
You may not have the resources to handle the national organisation, though. But in order to say that Ireland is part of the movement it would be enough to have a location there. Of course, having one locations makes it easier to find a second one or a national organiser (because it means less work for him).
It might be worth getting in touch with the Irish Linux Users Group?
I have tried to contact these:
Dublin Hackerspace TOG 20.01.2016 Dublin Unternehmen A1 Linux 20.01.2016 privates Blog Allin Gray 20.01.2016 Galway Makerspace 091 Labs 20.01.2016 Drogheda Makerspace Lightbox Lab 20.01.2016 Verein Digital Rights Ireland 13.05.2016, 15:46 Hackerspace Ireland Hacking Laboratory 15.06.2016 10:32 LUG Irish Linux Users Group 16.06.2016 22:18 Ubuntu Ireland 16.06.2016 22:36 Irish Free Software Organisation 16.06.2016 22:44
Before you only the Ireland Hacking Laboratory has answered (and Allin Gray but he cannot do anything this year). They are interested but just founding so they would help but currently not organise their own event. They have given me a list of IT associations in Ireland, though, which was useful.
From most countries I got only one or two responses whereas the first try response rate among German LUGs was about 50%. You could say, not surprising. But one UK LUG tried to find more hosting organisations in UK without any success. There are hardly any people who claim that this concept was not good but it seems to me that it is somehow more coincidence whethere there is a response or not. After all, often there is not even an answer on the mailing list of my own LUG... so that's probably not related to the LPD but just the typical behaviour.
