Latest on March 16th event: FOSS Means Business

What is set: * The name (new) is "FOSS Means Business" * The keynote speakers are Richard Stallman and Bruce Perens * A substantial part of Stallman's presentation will be about GPLv3 * The date is March 16th, and it's whole-day event, probably 10am to 5:30pm * The venue is Spires, Belfast ===================================== 2. What's not finished: * setting the timetable for the day - this is only half set * confirming some speakers * raising funds for improving the event's appearance (we have 2000 sterling, which covers the venue and loads of tea and coffee and buscuits, but we are still waiting on funding for a meal and welcome packs) ===================================== 3. What we need people to do Publicise this. Tell everyone to book the day out of the office, and to get their boss to do the same. * We need to tell mailing lists (Linux, free software, Unix, system administrators, creative commons, computer societies, computer-user lists, college societies, anything lists like that) * blogs: blog about this and get others to do so too. * Post to forums: I don't participate in many forums, so I don't know much about this, but there must be people here that do know * Send emails to news sites, and other sites, that have Events pages. Many sites like this exist. I've so far gotten this mentioned on http://www.ukuug.org/diary/ and on http://enn.ie/events.html * If you have business contact lists, please inform them informally if that is acceptable, or do so formally when we have a formal announcement ready * If you have press contacts, there will be a press release made about this, hopefully on Friday, so please be ready to forward that or tell someone (like myself) the details for contacting that journalist / press person * contribute to the wiki: http://belfoss.org (That is the official event wiki, for the public, so remember that the IT managers that we are trying to impress will be looking there.) * reply to this mail and tell me what I've forgotten When I put "foss means business" into google (including quotes), I get zero hits right now, so we can gauge how effective our web presence is spreading by checking that each day. Hi all, Enclosed is a html link to a questionnaire, if your going to complete it, it needs to be returned on or before the 31st March. They accept both hard and soft copy. If you wish to participate I am not offering any guidance but I would suggest you familiarise yourself with regard to it. It needs to be read very carefully. May Event

Hi all, after the AGM las night Ciaran mentioned that it would be a good idea to stage an event some time around the end of May. After a brief bout of conversation the consensus was that this event should be about how free software (licensing) fits into a business context. The even would consist of a series of speakers talking from different perspectives: 1) one from Enterprise Ireland/FAS 2) one free software licensing expert (Ciaran) 3) one strong business speaker (names mentioned were google, iona). The suggested venue for this talk was Trinity. I think a well promoted/polished talk in the same vein as the derossa one would do wonders for our credibility. I intend to start an entry in the ifso wiki later on this evening for planning purposes but before I do I'd like some feedback. -Harry

IFSO AGM reminder

Hello everybody, just a reminder. The IFSO AGM will be held on Monday evening. I propose we use the same protocol as last year: I and a number of other IFSO members will be in "The Duke" pub (on Duke lane, just off Grafton Street) from 6pm on Monday. At around 7pm, once everybody has turned up, we will move through to TCD where we will hold the AGM (same location a last year). Both members and non-members are welcome to attend, of course. There will be IFSO logo shirts in evidence, so if you do not recognise us just keep your eyes peeled for the harp-playing GNU logo. Thanks, -- Glenn Strong

The main reason for doing nothing is usually "I don't know who to send it to". Unfortunately, this rarely has an easy answer - but sending it to no one is the most certain way to fail. So please do something. Take some guesses and send it to a "minister for technology" or a "minister for internal market" or a "minister for competition". This event needs help wth promotion. (I'll do the IPRED2 thing I mail about yesterday.) I've made a page on the event wiki to help people promote it: http://foss-means-business.org/Promotion The news of the event doesn't seem to be spreading, and it's 27 days away, and since it's daytime, many people need to hear about it early so they can get the time out of the office. So hopefully that page has the info that people need to spread it around - and if it doesn't, it's a wiki, so a note can be added or suggestions and questions can be discussed here. The venue can hold 750 and it can be reconfigured if necessary to hold 1150, so there's no ceiling really on how many people can attend. A press release about the event will go out on Monday, but the majority of free software users, have probably not heard about it. It would be a shame if the turn-out was low. I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in hearing Stallman and Perens if they knew the event was happening.
