New "IP Rights" enforcement directive

As discussed at the last meeting, there's a new directive on enforcement of "IPRs". The worst of it is that it aims to make willful infringement of patents, unauthorised copying, and DRM circumvention criminal offences. (This applies to anything that falls under the "IP" banner.) Next worse is a set of extremist investigative powers it gives to rights holders which would, for example, allow the next SCO to reak much more havok (at tax payers expense). I suggest the best way to tackle this is to write an opinion on the license, and then send out a press release. This is a matter of democracy, and monitoring democracy is the free presses job, so we should help them. I've started a wiki page where I'll begin the opinion. It seeks to clarify the different opportunities and constraints facing F/OSS adoption in different sectors and parts of the world. It is an inevitably partial account that--we hope--can be extended and deepened by other participants in these processes. We invite your help in preparing POSA 2.0. To sweeten the pot, two prizes of $250 will be awarded to the best new contributions to POSA 2.0 . This project was made possible by a grant from the Ford Foundation.

Revised instructions for CD installer

Hi All Appreciate so many fast responses, so before anyone wastes any time on it, here's an update. Motivation: I want to show off Ubuntu at the appropriate speed Secondly: It blows the 'difficult to install' myth right out of the water Instructions as before with these corrections: Packages needed (I think, see problem below) morphixinstaller_0.5-6_i386.deb os-prober gengrubmenu2 (Got off net, probably on HoaryCD as well grub (Hoary CD) grub-installer (HoaryCD) pivotroot (can't remember where I got it, net I think, probably Hoary) OK -what I THOUGHT was causing the installer to segfault with the last instructions was permissions on some file or other (Or the absense of pivot_root). Interestingly with all of the above, I STILL segfaulted on the partitioning stage. Reason: I THINK the reason was that no partition had been created. I created a 2gb ntfs and left the rest free. This confused morphixinstaller under both sets of instructions. The spare PC is loading fine now (Oh, just finished, loading, congratulating, rebooting) Looks like instructions set one MAY have worked only for my disk layout. Thanks for all the replies. I'll take stock and post tomorrow evening with something substantial and keep a fleeting eye on the mailbox meanwhile! TheOpenCD3 Installation to Hard Disk

Maybe some of you could try this. First, get the following files from a Gnoppix Mirror * gengrubmenu2_0.1-3_all.deb * os-prober_0.1-1_all.deb * morphixinstaller_0.2-13.1_i386.deb Next, install them (It's ok to 'force' because the objection is to 'pivot_root', but pivot_root is already in /sbin. Nice! So, boot the CD, make these downloads available on the filesystem, go to that place and $ sudo dpkg -i --force-all `ls *.deb` $ sudo chmod g+x `which morphixinstaller` # I suspect this is an unnecessary step # because we sudo it anyway in the launcher Nearly there, I put a launcher on the Desktop with the Synaptic pixmap. 'Cat'ting the result of the "Hard Disk Installation" icon shows what's below. Doubleclicking on it will install to hard disk. I'm going to test this procedure over the weekend on various PCs. Maybe others could too. Either way, I expect to be happy with it. All I do then is automate this with a wee script and append the boot scripts to run it. Hope that's clear, hope that's cool. Opinions on the installer?

Appreciate the feedback so far. I cringe at web-polls but it would be nice to know how people feel about this. My take on it was that with our last CD, I could feel real smug showing how easy it was to install and let the user go away and repeat (usually on their second PC). IMHO, if we're doing any work on the CD (in terms of Firefox homepage and links etc) we may as well track down an installer as well. I'll look at the ones on my usbstick tonight (if the socket behaves). Sorry Malcolm, but I nearly always install these things somewhere on something to poke and play with it and see how good it is.
