Hi, wie ist der offizielle Standpunkt der FSFE zum Thema freie Hardware?

Ich hatte auf dem WCW letztes Wochenende im Gespräch erfahren, dass von Seiten der FSFs (E und ohne E) kaum Rückendeckung für freie/Open Hardware gekommen ist.
Ich weiss das ihr euch ziemlich sicher dazu nicht auch noch kümmern könnt/wollt, aber ich meine es würde schon reichen offiziell Stellung zu beziehen und ein paar Begrifflichkeiten festzumachen. Konkrete Unternehmungen können wir ja im Rahmen des Fellowships machen.

Ein praktisches Problem mit unfreier Hardware, dass mich auch betrifft, ist zum Beispiel die nicht öffentliche bzw. Patentbelastung der Funktionsweise der Jazelle-Erweiterung in ARM CPUs (vorbildlich dagegen Atmel AVR32 - da ist Ähnliches öffentlich dokumentiert).
Ein anderes praktisches Problem war, dass es von Seiten ARM Ltd. nicht gestattet war, alle Instruktionen der armv7 Architektur in einen Emulator (in diesem Fall ging es um QEMU) einzubauen. Ursache für die (mittlerweile abgeschaffte) Regelung war, das ARM selbst einen proprietären Emulator vertreibt ...
Zwar läßt sich bei HW argumentieren, dass es Geld und materielle Güter braucht um sie zu fertigen, aber ein HW-Design kann auch emuliert und in einen FPGA (wieder-)programmiert werden. Und das Bildungsargument (Freier Zugang zu HW-Designs für Studierende) macht für mich ebenfalls Sinn.
Zu guter letzt: Auch wenn die Marketingabteilungen was anderes behaupten. HW Designs sind nicht selten Wegwerfprodukte mit geringer Qualität. Man besorge sich Linux-Quellcode und überfliege den Quellcode von Treibern für selbst einfache Geräte wie MMC-Kartenleser und wundere sich über die Quirks um Manches davon zum Laufen zu bekommen.
Nur das mich keiner falsch versteht. Ich sehe es mit Hardware nicht so eng wie mit Software: Ich würde mir auch eine HW mit proprietärem Design (aber freien Treibern) kaufen. Der Hersteller steigt aber in seiner Gunst wenn es öffentliche und vollständige (!) Spezifikationen gibt und noch mehr wenn auch das Design frei ist.

FSFE und FSF sind dafür. :)

(WCW?) Da kann ich nur wild vermuten, dass die erwartete konkrete Art der Rückendeckung nicht angefragt wurde. (Der im Spiegel genannte Veranstaltung Ende April in Taiwan, haben wir mindestens mit einem guten Kontakt geholfen.)

Natürlich wär es gut dafür noch ein gute Webseite bei der FSFE zu haben, Freiwillige vor. Das bräuchte Ausarbeitung und Umsetzung. :)
