hier die Mail von mir an column@brave-gnu-world.org, als Antwort auf die Kolumne im Linux-Magazin:
Ich bin der Author von TuxFleet http://tuxfleet.sourceforge.net, einem 3D Raumkampfsimulator im Stil von Elite,X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter oder Wing Commander. TuxFleet steht (seit anbeginn) unter der GPL, laeuft auf allen Plattformen und basiert auf der plib (plib.sourceforge.net) von Steve Baker. TuxFleet ist inzwischen tot - mangels Entwicklern, Feedback, 3D Tools, 3D Editoren, 3D Modellen, Leute die freie 3D Modelle erstellen, Graphiker, etc. etc.
Ich kann mich den Klagen ueber Probleme/Hindernisse bei der Entwicklung von freien 3D-Spielen nur anschliessen.
Es gibt zwar inzwischen massig freie 3D Renderer oder 3D Engines (plib,lib3dtk,libsgl,gauge3d,crystalspace,nebuladevice etc etc etc), aber welcher 3D Renderer der beste fuer schnelle Spiele ist...
Ausserdem gibt es keine guten 3D-Editoren, obwohl allerdings etliche derzeit im entstehen sind (prettypoly,vertex3,k3d,etc etc etc. Und es gibt keine Tool zum konvertieren von existierenden Modellen - die meisten Tools schaffen nur das Mesh, aber die Textur geht verloren.
DIe Entwickler von GPLter 3D Software scheinen auch nicht genug zusammenzuarbeiten - im zweifelsfall kuemmert sich jeder nur um sein eigenes Projekt und schreibt im zweifelsfall selbst nen 3D renderer und Netzengine, anstatt auf existierenden Projekten aufzusetzen.
Ich habe versucht, Kontakt zu versch. anderen Raumkampfsimulatoren aufzubauen, aber das hat nicht geklappt. Inzwischen gibt es sogar viele Raumkampfsimulatoren auf dem 'Markt' - aber alle muessen mit wenigen Entwickler auskommen und mit wenigen Graphikern und mit wenig Feedback und jeder macht sein eigenes Ding - wenn man die Anstrengenungen buendeln koennte, _dann_ erst koennte was draus werden. Ja, ich bin frustriert.
Und es gibt - zumindest fuer den Bereich 'Raumschiffe' - keine nutzbaren 3D Modelle ueberhaupt - entweder sind die Raumschiffmodelle im Netz fuers Raytracing gemacht und haben tausende von Polygonen und sind fuer Spiele nicht nutzbar, oder die Modelle sind als addon fuer existierende kommerzielle Spiele gemacht, fuer die die Konvertierungstools fehlen... Ausserdem ist niemand so originell und kreativ, seine eigenen Raumschiffe zu bauen - es sind immer Kopien von irgendwelchen Raumschiffen, die aus Film und Fernsehen bekannt sind - inwieweit ein Tie-Fighter oder X-Wing in nem GPLten Spiel mitgeliefert werden kann, ist hier die Frage.
Vorschlaege fuer das Linux-Magazin, wie man dem aus der Misere helfen koennte: * Vorstellung diverser freier Spiele * Vorstellung diverser 3D Renderer inklusive Einfuehrung in die API * Aufbau eines Servers fuer freie (GPLte) 3D Modelle/Texturen/Graphiken und entsprechende Aufrufe an eure Leser, denn ohne '3D Artists' gibt es keine 3D Spiele - und der durchschnittliche Programmierer ist als Polygonbastler einfach *mies*
Wenn man die ganzen Bestrebungen in dem Bereich buendeln koennte und anstatt vieler Projekte mit wenigen Entwicklern weniger Projekte mit mehr Entwicklern haben koennte, dann koennte man kommerziellen Produkten zeigen, wie es besser geht :-)
