Wie in der letzten (gelöschten) Mail erwähnt, gab es einiges in der XMPP Community einiges an Diskussionen, nachdem Justizministerin Katarina Barley in einem Zeit Artikel die Forderung zur Öffnung Whatsapps für dritte Anbieter gefordert hatte.
Prinzipiell ist die Idee, dass Messenger untereinander kommunizieren können natürlich klasse. Jedoch sollte die Umsetzung nicht "WhatsApp-zentrisch" sein, sondern auf bestehenden, offenen Protokollen basieren, um grösstmögliche Fairness zu gewährleisten.
Aus diesem Grund haben einige Mitglieder der XMPP Community zusammen mit der Initiative Freie-Messenger.de einen Brief an Frau Barley geschrieben (Kopie findet sich unten), um auf offene Protokolle wie XMPP oder Matrix aufmerksam zu machen.
Dazu gab es bereits mindestens eine Rückfrage als Reaktion. Eventuell hat ja jemand aus der FSFE weitere Ideen oder möchte sich einmischen? Interessierte finden im Jabber MUC xmpp:freie-messenger@conference.jabber.de?join schnell Anschluss :)

bezugnehmend auf Ihren am letzten Freitag veröffentlichten Vorschlag bzw. die Forderung "WhatsApp für andere Dienste zu öffnen" (*) stimmen wir Ihnen zu und möchten auf bereits bestehende Lösungen hinweisen, die dieser Forderung in besonderem Maße nachkommen.
Aus heutiger Sicht kann sich keiner vorstellen, dass Telefonate oder E-Mails nur innerhalb des Netzes eines Anbieters möglich wären. So wäre es undenkbar, wenn Kommunikation nur anbietergebunden (Telekom, Vodafone, T-Online, gmx, web.de, ...) funktionieren würde. Grund ist, dass hier die Datenübertragung anbieterunabhängig geregelt ist und es entsprechende Normen/Standards gibt. Beispielsweise findet mittels "SMTP" für e-Mail, "ISDN" oder "SIP" für Telefonie die Kommunikation zwischen den unterschiedlichen Diensten statt.
Jeder Bürger kann also einen beliebigen Anbieter wählen, ein Telefon, ein e-Mail-Programm seiner Wahl verwenden - und dank öffentlicher Standards funktioniert das Gesamtsystem trotzdem.
Warum sollte das beim Austausch von Kurznachrichten mit Messengern anders sein?
Deshalb haben wir mit Freude ihre Forderung zur Öffnung von WhatsApp für andere Dienste vernommen. Der gesellschaftspolitische Bedarf einer unabhängigen, dezentralen Kommunikation per Messenger ist unbestritten vorhanden.
Die Lösung: Bereits seit fast 20 Jahren gibt es hierfür einen offen dokumentierten, internationalen und herstellerunabhängigen Industriestandard: "XMPP"
Hier ist kein Messengerprogramm vorgegeben, sondern es stehen dutzende zur Auswahl, die auch kostenlos und ohne Altersbeschränkung genutzt werden können. Die Firma Google hat XMPP zur Föderation des "Google Talk"-Dienstes mit anderen Anbietern verwendet. Aber auch mit "Matrix" steht ein weiteres, junges Protokoll zur Verfügung, für das sich die französische Regierung kürzlich entschieden hat.
Hinter diesem Allgemeingut (das Protokoll gehört "jedem") steht jedoch keine finanzkräftige Firma mit entsprechendem Marketingbudget. Deshalb wird in der Presse/Öffentlichkeit leider meistens das Produkt einer Firma (Telegram, Threema, Signal, usw.) als Alternative genannt, die selbst jedoch auch keine dezentrale Kommunikation zulassen. Ironischerweise basieren viele dieser geschlossenen Systeme auf XMPP - auch WhatsApp.
Damit "Chat" denselben offenen Status wie "E-Mail" bekommt, treiben wir seit einiger Zeit das ehrenamtliche Projekt "Freie Messenger" voran. Kurz zusammengefasst geht es um die Förderung der Nutzung von dezentralen, standardisierten Messengersystemen (E-Mail/hat) die für die Nutzer - frei (ohne Einschränkung) - offen (quelloffen und nachprüfbar) - sicher - erprobt und - kostenlos sind.
Da wir weder eine Firma noch ein Produkt vertreten, sind wir unabhängig und innerhalb der großen bereits existierenden Gemeinschaft von Entwicklern, Betreibern und Nutzern aktiv.
Wir würden uns sehr freuen, wenn Sie die hier vorgebrachten Informationen nutzen können, um Ihre und unsere gemeinsame Forderung nach einem anbieterunabhängigen Chatsystem auch in der breiten Öffentlichkeit zu etablieren.

Und gerade einleuchtende Denkanstöße sind wichtig im Kampf gegen die verbreitete Ansicht, dass Freiheit unwichtig ist und diese oder jene unfreie Lösung bequemer oder kostengünstiger ist.
Wer sind die "wir", die seit einiger Zeit das ehrenamtliche Projekt "Freie Messenger" vorantreiben? Das, was ihr für Freie Messenger macht, mache ich für Datenbankanwendungen mit meinem Framework "Lino", das inzwischen immerhin drei Ganztagsprogrammierer beschäftigt. Aber wir haben im Grunde das gleiche Problem wie ihr: unser Ziel ist viel zu hoch für ein ehrenamtliches Projekt oder einen kleinen Familienbetrieb. Dazu braucht es eine mächtige Organisation. Ich formuliere es (für Lino) momentan, indem ich eine Preson suche, die so eine Organisation auf die Beine stellt: http://www.saffre-rumma.net/jobs/pm/ Allerdings hätte ich momentan noch nicht einmal Geld, um so einen Manager zu bezahlen.

Wer sind die "wir", die seit einiger Zeit das ehrenamtliche Projekt "Freie Messenger" vorantreiben?
Dabei handelt es sich in erster Linie um Martin Gekeler, der mit einigen Unterstützern die Webseite https://freie-messenger.de betreibt. Erreichen kann man ihn unter info@freie-messenger.de :)
Die Idee zu dem Brief kam in einem deutschsprachigen MUC und Martin hat freundlicherweise die Initiative ergriffen, aus unseren gemeinschaftlich zusammengetragenen Stichpunkten den Brief zu formulieren und abzusenden.
Das, was ihr für Freie Messenger macht, mache ich für Datenbankanwendungen mit meinem Framework "Lino", das inzwischen immerhin drei Ganztagsprogrammierer beschäftigt. Aber wir haben im Grunde das gleiche Problem wie ihr: unser Ziel ist viel zu hoch für ein ehrenamtliches Projekt oder einen kleinen Familienbetrieb. Dazu braucht es eine mächtige Organisation.
