Nur handverlesen ist bislang allerdings die Zahl jener Städte und Behörden, die es München gleichtaten. Neben Leipzig, Mannheim oder Freiburg setzen auch einige Bundes- und Landesbehörden auf freie Software. Von einem flächendeckenden Umstieg öffentlicher Verwaltungen, wie er in Strategiepapieren deutscher Bundesregierungen noch bis weit in die 2000er Jahren hinein propagiert wurde, kann inzwischen aber keine Rede mehr sein.
Hier wird zu sehr auf den Arbeitsplatz geschaut. Bie Betriebssystem und Office sind es nur wenige, in anderen Bereichen viel mehr. Jeder Betrieb hat heute Freie Software, jede Verwaltung hat heute Freie Software (fast) jede Privatperson hat Freie Software.
Ein Großteil der Geräte (Mehrzahl sogar), die wir täglich benutzen läuft mit Freier Software: von Wlan-Routern, Mobiltelefonen, Fernsehapperaten, TV-Setup-Boxen, Digitalen Videorekordern, Tablets, ...
Aber selbst bei Office und Betriebssystemen hier schnell mal ein paar Beispiele:
Die Polizei in Niedersachsen (11.620 Arbeitsplätze) und die niedersächsische Finanzverwaltung (12.000 Arbeitsplätze) (das sind dopplet so viel wie in München mit 12.000 GNU/Linux und 15.000 OpenOffice Arbeitsplätzen).
