am letzten Donnerstag wahr ich auf einer Info Veranstaltung zum Erstsemester im Studiengang Wirtschaftsinformatik an der Hochschule auf der ich möglicherweise bald studieren werde. Dort habe ich den Professoren die Frage gestellt, welche Rolle Freie Software auf dieser Hochschule spielt. Als Antwort bekam ich dann mehr oder weniger ein "ja, also sie können sich Visual Studio auf unserer Hompage kostenlos herunterladen.". Da sich die Schule bei der Veranstaltung mit Hilfe einer Rankingliste gerne mit anderen Hochschulen, und Universitäten verglichen hat, stelle ich mir nun die Frage ob es eine solche Rankingliste auch zum Thema Nutzung und Wertschätzung von FLOSS Software auf Deutschen Schulen, Hochschulen und Universitäten gibt. Wenn nein wäre so etwas Sinnvoll?

stelle ich mir nun die Frage ob es eine solche Rankingliste auch zum Thema Nutzung und Wertschätzung von FLOSS Software auf Deutschen Schulen, Hochschulen und Universitäten gibt. Wenn nein wäre so etwas Sinnvoll?
Ich finde die Idee super. Ich stand selbst vor kurzem vor der Entscheidung, an welcher Hochschule ich studieren möchte. Dabei hat mir eine solche Liste mit Einschätzungen gefehlt. Da es schon keinen Studiengang (in Deutschland) gibt, der sich vorrangig mit freier Software beschäftigt, sollte es zu mindestens eine Hochschule sein, die mich mit freier Software arbeiten lässt. Es ging mir dabei um Informationen wie z.B.: Unterstützt die Hochschule freie Software und hat sie im Einsatz?; oder kann ich ohne Probleme alles am eigenen Rechner (mit freier Software) bewältigen?; oder "zwingt" mich de Hochschule mit nicht freier Software zu arbeiten?; oder gucken mich die Professoren verdutzt an und fragen was freie Software ist?
An sich gibt es ja auch eine Menge junger Leute in der Szene, die von ihren Hochschulen vielleicht berichten können. Dabei wäre meiner Meinung nach, eine "Sternchenskala" weniger aussagekräftig. Cool wäre ein kurzer Fragebogen, mit dem die Bedingungen an der jeweiligen Hochschule abgesteckt werden, und außerdem Platz für anderweitige Erfahrungsberichte. Ein richtiges Ranking (mit erstem Platzt und so) stelle ich mir dabei schwierig umzusetzen vor, da es bestimmt auch an den FLOSS freundlicheren Hochschulen jeweils ein paar +/- Punkte geben wird. Machbarer wäre vielleicht eine Zuordnung der Hochschulen in Gruppen, z.B.: "Hat FLOSS im Einsatz"...oder irgendwie so.
Unter Umständen hat ein solches Ranking ja sogar Einfluss auf das Verhalten der Hochschulen, denn wenn es darum geht, auf irgendeiner Liste möglichst gut abzuschneiden, werden manche Hochschulen ja auf einmal ganz aktiv (meine Wahrnehmung).

Ja so würde ich das auch einschätzen, allerdings wäre ich auch mit einer einfachen Bewertung zu zufrieden. Das könnte auch schon Anreiz genug sein.

Ich kenne Chemiker, die in Frankfurt von zu Hause aus per SSH ihre Simulationen auf (Debian)Uni-Maschinen administrieren konnten. Kenne aber auch Leute, bei denen ähnliches undenkbar gewesen wäre.
Wie feingliedrig wollen wir werden? Um nützlich zu sein: von wievielen Unis brauchen wir Infos zu wie vielen Fakultäten und wie vielen Professorinnen? Und das aktualisiert für jedes Semester. Wer füttert uns vor Ort mit diesen Daten? Oder wie bekommen wir Leute flächendeckend motiviert uns diese Daten zu liefern?
Wenn es Hochschulen gibt, die gewisse Mindeststandards Fakultätsübergreifend vorschreiben, dann könnte man das leichter aufnehmen.

Ich denke den Haken bei "Hat FS im Einsatz" kann man bei _jeder Institution_ setzten. Diese Problematik hätte man mit einem tos;dr-Ansatz [4] mit abgedeckt, denke ich.

(Nicht mal meine Wahrnehmung, sondern nur eine Vermutung:) Sie werden aktiv bei Ranking-Listen, von denen sie glauben sie wirken sich auf die Anzahl der Studenten aus. Den Prozentsatz der Menschen, die sich die Uni danach aussuchen ob sie FS nutzen dürfen, schätze ich derzeit recht niedrig ein.
Aber das soll uns nicht davon abhalten diejenigen Institutionen zu sammeln und zu loben, die es bereits richtig machen. So etwas wünsche ich mir schon länger [5].

ich würde mich ja gerne sofort dafür bereitstellen. Leider habe ich schon so bereits genug um die Ohren. Ich werde das Thema aber auf jeden Fall bei unserem nächsten lokalen Fellowship treffen ansprechen, und wenn sich mehr Leute für eine solche Aktion finden lassen bin ich gerne bereit das ein oder andere mit zu organisieren.

Ja, das geht halt vielen so. Viele finden es super, aber nur wenige können mitarbeiten.
jeden Fall bei unserem nächsten lokalen Fellowship treffen ansprechen, und wenn sich mehr Leute für eine solche Aktion finden lassen bin ich gerne bereit das ein oder andere mit zu organisieren.
Das ist eine gute Idee. Habe das Thema auch auf die Agenda des Treffens in Frankfurt am 2. September gesetzt. :)

Hallo Sabet, hallo Liste,
so ein Hochschulranking nach FLOSS-Freundlichkeit hätte ich mir bei meiner Hochschulwahl auch gewünscht. Stattdessen hieß es die Angaben zu den Studieninhalten interessanter Informatikstudiengänge genau lesen, nachfragen und viele Hochschule besuchen.
Hier in Dresden gibt es mit der Hochschulgruppe "Freie Software Freies Wissen Dresden" (www.fsfw-dresden.de) eine Initiative von Aktiven, die sich für mehr * Freie Software in Lehre und Forschung * OpenAccess * sowie sichere Kommunikation einsetzt.
Ihr gehören hochschulseitig vor allem Studentinnen und Studenten der TU und der HTW an. In letzterer gibt es beim StuRa sogar einen eigenen Hochschulpolitischen Bereich zu der Thematik. Vielleicht lässt sich sogar etwas über die landesweiten Studierendenvertretungen (KSS, FZS, KIF) erreichen.
Nun aber zur HTW. In den PC-Pools der Informatikfakultät gibts Dual-Boot-PCs (Suse-Linux/ Win). SSH-Login auf einen Linuxserver ist für alle Studierenden möglich und in einigen Modulen sogar (für Praktika und Belegarbeiten) gefordert. Programmierbelege (C, C++, Java) sollten möglichst betriebssystemunabhängig sein und müssen zumindest in meinem Studiengang (Allgemeine Informatik) auf einem der Linuxrechner mit gcc kompiliert werden können (ist bei Belegabgabe vorzuführen). Darüber hinaus werden eine ganze Reihe Linux-Tools und für die sichere (E-Mail-)kommunikation das Kerckhoffsche Prinzip gelehrt. Andererseits wird auch (noch) die ein oder andere Software gelehrt, für die es gute Freie Alternativen gäbe - etwa im Bereich Datenbanken. Auch bei Dateiformaten - speziell E-Mailanhängen - gibts häufig noch Verbbesserungspotential.
Ein Bekannter von mir, der an der TU studiert und ebenfalls bei der FSFW Dresden mitmacht, schrieb dazu:

Die Erfahrungen können innerhalb einer Hochschule, manchmal sogar innerhalb eines Studiengangs (je nach Vertiefung) sehr unterschiedlich sein. Entscheidend ist letztlich die Einstellung der jeweiligen Lehrkräfte zum Thema Freie Software. Die Information ist also sehr heterogen und sie sinnvoll zu verdichten macht wahrscheinlich einigen Aufwand.
Vielleicht könnte man statt einem Hochschulranking eher Statusbeschreibungen für einzelne Studiengänge an der jeweiligen Hochschule erstellen. Wenn man damit genug Informationen sammelt, kann man die immernoch entsprechend der Hochschulen zusammenfassen.
Insgesamt sollte aber das Aufwand-Nutzen-Verhältnis im Blick bleiben.
Über die FSFW Dresden versuchen wir die Arbeit an Freier Software als wissenschaftliche Leistung anerkennen zu lassen. Diese sollte natürlich unter entsprechenden Lizenzen publiziert werden. Auf diese Weise ließen sich z.B. Einsparungen bei Softwarelizenzen nachhaltig zur Finanzierung von entsprechenden Stellen an der Hochschule verwenden.

Ob eine solche Liste dazu geeignet ist eine Hochschule dazu zu bewegen möglichst hoch gelistet zu werden (und sich damit meiner Wunschvorstellung annähert) hängt davon ab wie viele Studenten ihre Uni-Wahl davon abhängig machen. Ich habe zwar keine empirischen Zahlen zur Hand, aber ich bin da verhalten pessimistisch.
Wie auch immer die Liste aussehen würde (dazu antworte ich später noch auf Sabets Mail), es würde in jedem Fall einen ordentlichen Arbeitsaufwand erfordern sie zu erstellen und vor allem aktuell zu halten, damit sie auch nützlich bleibt.
Wenn die Hochschulen die Liste ignorieren, wie ich fürchte, hätte man damit ein Tool für FS Anhänger geschaffen, FS affine Unis zu finden.
Ohne Zweifel nützlich, aber nur wenig, was eine Änderung des Status Quo bewirkt IMO.
Wenn es eine solche Liste gäbe, würde ich sie natürlich möglichst weit bekannt machen. :)
