Hallo zusammen,
ich verstehe die Aufregung nicht so ganz. wer hat noch - außer in ganz speziellen Anwendungen (z.b. Router) noch Hardware aus den 90-Jahren des vorigen Jahrhundert laufen.
Das sind Rechner, die noch mit Win 95/98 ausgeliefert wurden.
Welche Anwendungen laufen noch mit 64 MB RAM. Das hatte mein stärkster Rechner aus der Reihe, die ab der nächsten Debian Version nicht mehr unterstützt wird.
Alle neueren Rechner werden weiterhin von Debian unterstützt.

GnuPG, Mutt, Claws, ... die Liste is lang.
Aber wohl kein systemd Zeugs ;-)
Ist aber auch egal - ich habe keine Netzteile mehr für die alten Motherboards. Und es gibt ja immer noch NetBSD.

Hier in unserem Projekt in Mülheim laufen noch eine Reihe von Rechnern unter solchen Bedingungen. Glücklicherweise gibt es doch noch einige, die nicht gleich alles weg werfen, was nicht mehr ganz frisch.
Und unter Linux laufen dankenswerter Weise noch viel alte Schätzchen!
Und vor allem: Das wisst ihr doch, auch Debian weiß das.

Intel Quark ist ein moderner Prozessor (2013) als 585 mit einigen (nicht allen) 686 Features..

Wie Werner schon sagte, es gibt durchaus andere Möglichkeiten für solche Spezialfälle (wobei im konkreten Fall ein Test durchaus sinnvoll erscheint).

Debian ist auf dieser Plattform im Einsatz; in einem Bugreport wird ein Hardwarefehler erwähnt, den Intel eingeräumt hat. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=738575

Nichts für ungut -- aber glaubst Du ernsthaft, dass *irgendwer* noch ein 586-System mit einem aktuellen Debian betreibt?...
Zur Erinnerung: 568-Prozessoren waren schon vor etwa 18 Jahren überholt. Mein 586-Notebook -- dass damals etwa zehn Jahre alt war -- musste ich vor etwa zehn Jahren ausrangieren, weil ein aktuelles Debian auf diesem Rechner schon damals (aufgrund begrenzer RAM-Ausbau-Fähigkeit) völlig unbrauchbar war.
Ich finde es erschreckend, dass Debian sich jetzt erst endlich zu diesem längst überfälligen Schritt durchringen konnte. Immerhin holt ein Kompilieren für 686 aus typischen Programmen Mal eben etwa 20% mehr Performance raus. Ich finde es geradezu unverantwortlich, dass das so lange rausgezögert wurde -- schon aus Gründen der Energieeffizienz; und auch der Nutzbarkeit von tatsächlich noch brauchbarer älterer Hardware...
