Hello!
Just a quick report from FInland: today and tomorrow we have this Open Finland event: http://avoinsuomi2014.fi/
It is organized by the Finnish Government (cabinet office). The main focus is open data, but COSS (the local FSFE in Finland) is one of the organizers and open source / free software is also present and Microsoft and Oracle cannot be seen anywhere. In the opening speech the prime minister of Finland also mentioned "open source" specifically though the main focus of his talk was about generic openness and digitalization.

I've come across COSS quite frequently. How come COSS is not listed as an associate organisation [1]?
It's not just because the "OS" in the name?

I don't know. I don't know how the process of becoming a associate organisation even works. Maybe FSFE staff could contact them and start making direct formal relationships?

Just to let you know that I'm currently the Chairman of COSS ry.
Likewise, as with Otto, I'm not sure what an affiliate organization from FSFE perspective means. Anyhow, COSS ry is certainly open to deepen its relationships internationally, e.g. with FSFE.
Best, Martin

Yes, we should work together in future, and I am looking forward to do so. If you have any specific tasks in mind, please let us know.
It is just very unlikely that there can be something formal like the associated organisation program with organisation which have “open source” in the name. E.g. in Germany we also work closely together with the Open Source Business Alliance. But the name prevented us from having them as associates (and as explained in my other mail, we also have to reshape this program). This was not a problem for getting work done, though.
Best Regards, Matthias

For COSS it isn't a problem because nowadays COSS stands for Centre for Open Systems and Solutions, so it does not violate the rule "no open source in name".

No, that was not the reason. The reason was that we did not actively try to get new associates, as we did not have a good vision how to work with those organisations.
But beside that “Open Source” in the name of the organisation was a no-go in the past.
For the future, we need to decide if we want to have some organisation with whom we have such a long term relationship as associates, or if we we work with others on a case by case basis and depending on the topics.
If we choose to have associates in future: How to remove organisations (if they are inactive, or changing their way of work), how to add new ones (e.g. just after we already did more projects together in the past).
From my point of view we have to work closer with other organisations in future, but I am not yet sure the associates program, is the best way to do so. I would like tackle this, after we clarified our own mission statement, when we have to think about our structure and how that fits our mission.
Regards, Matthias
