Hello,
A FSFE mailing list admin (Ville Sundell) is organizing an event called Finhack, which is a gathering of diverse free and open software and content people. Website (in Finnish) at: http://www.finhack.org
I myself am also kind of assisting Ville.
Would it be OK to put FSFE's logo on the website and say that the event is done in cooperation with the FSFE?

first off, thanks to you and Ville for asking!
If the event meets some criteria, I think it would be great for FSFE to be listed as a supporter.
Can you or Ville give us some more information about Finhack? I've had a look at the website, but my Finnish is definitely not up to the task (it's not even good for ordering beer) [1].
For FSFE to endorse the event with our support, we would have to know a few things. Much of the information I'm asking for is probably available from the website, and it would be great if you or Ville could share it with us in English.
- in a nutshell, what is the event about?
- how does the event promote software freedom. Are there talks about Free Software? What sort of talks are there?
- Do the organisers and the promotional materials talk about Free Software, or is it all about "open source"?
- who is running the event? How has it been run in the past?
- what's the role of the event in the Finnish Free Software community?
If the team is happy with the answers to those questions, then FSFE can be listed as a supporter.
Saying that the event is organised "in cooperation with FSFE" would put the bar considerably higher. In the past, this has usually meant that FSFE had a substantial and active role in organising the event, including a say over the content and the speakers. That's not the case here.
Thanks in advance for your effort, and good luck with the last <2 weeks of preparations!
best regards, Karsten
Hello,
I wrote quickly a summary in English to address your questions: http://www.finhack.org/doku.php?id=english_summary
)The wiki software at the website isn't very good, so don't mind the glitches. I might take charge for the website/marketing next year and make it proper.)
Also, some comments below:

You forgot the footnote in your message. I bet it was interesting :)

- in a nutshell, what is the event about?
free software (and to minor extent free/open contents)
- how does the event promote software freedom. Are there talks about Free Software? What sort of talks are there?
It's a free software only event, so a short answer is: promotes in all ways we can think of.
- Do the organisers and the promotional materials talk about Free Software, or is it all about "open source"?
We talk about "vapaa" which is like "libre". Sometimes we also use the acronym VALO which is the equivalent of FOSS with the nice twist that it also meant "light" as in sunlight.
- who is running the event? How has it been run in the past?
Ville Sundell is the main organizer. I and some other guys help out (e.g. I fixed us a location). The event was previously been organised 2 or 3 times in the city of Forssa (I've personally been there only once).
- what's the role of the event in the Finnish Free Software community?
At the moment it is the only and biggest grass-roots event for free software coders and other hackers. There are also events like OpenMind organized by COSS and some larger local events by local LUGs etc, but this will have people from all around Finland attending.
If the team is happy with the answers to those questions, then FSFE can be listed as a supporter.

Ok, we'll list FSFE as a supporter this year and take you in the planning process next year, so we can upgrade the level of FSFE'ness (if it suits Ville).
Hi Otto,
thanks for your quick and thorough answer!
That sounds very good. Let's quickly run it through team-decisions, and you should be good to go :-)
best, Karsten

Hello,
We had this discussion partially already last September, but I'd like to be assured: is it OK to list FSFE (as text and logo) under "in cooperation with" at Finhack.org and at other places at the event itself?
The main organiser (Ville Sundell) is the maintainer of the fsfe-fi-list. All the speakers are FSFE Fellows and some of them are members of the FSFE Finnish team. There well be a FSFE booth (Henri organises) and we have a lot of say in the planning of the event.
English summary at: http://finhack.org/index.php?page=english
This spring Finhack is a "track" within the Meego Summit FI, so it will get more visibility and hopefully attract new people too, but most of the participants are Finnish FS developers.

Hi Otto,
apologies for the long response time.

Are the parameters more or less the same as last year, as per the questions below?

I understand from Otto that we're dealing with the same setup as last September, when we decided that FSFE would be listed as cooperating with Finhack.
So I suggest that we give Otto a "yes". I'll post to team-decisions now.
