I worked one and a half days for FSFE this week. Kirschner == Fellowship == - Enquired on behalf of a UK Fellow about profile pages for each fellow on fellowship.fsfe.org (M. Kirschner referred me to http://wiki.fsfe.org/Fellows) - Sent UK Fellow instructions relating to FSFE team member GPG keys == Community == - Travelled to London to Open Rights Group (Re)Connect meeting (report below) - Attended Manchester Free Software talk on PostgresSQL by founder of 2ndQuadrant. Kirschner regarding AVM vs Cybits case == Web == - Proposed new solution to integration of join and donate buttons on every fsfe website page == Preview == - Take a day off to reflect extra hours recently worked - Run Manchester Fellowship Meeting - Create list of software related community groups in Manchester on wiki.fsfe.org - Add events for future Fellowship meetings to fsfe.org - Get leaflets printed - Follow up on contacts made at ORG event - [carried over] Begin planning of UK Fellows meeting - [carried over] Plan PDF Readers sprint, arrange venue, send notifications - [carried over] Confirm travel arrangements to Strasbourg ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ORG (Re)Connect report: On Friday 24th June I travelled from Manchester to Liverpool Street in London to attend an annual community event hosted by the UK based Open Rights Group (ORG). ORG is a prominent digital liberties group apparently similar to the EFF in their mission, with 27,000 members of one mailing list, four full time staff [1] and an advisory council including Cory Doctorow, Alan Cox, and Heather Brooke [2]. I engaged in three workshops discussing ways for ORG to improve its communication and campaigns, most of which was also relevant to FSFE, and engaged in particularly useful discussions and networking with the following attendees: - Jim Killock, Executive Director, Open Rights Group - Peter Bradwell, Campaign Officer, Open Rights Group - Nishma Doshi, Community and Events Officer, Open Rights Group - Dj Walker-Morgan, Editor in Chief, Heise Media UK Ltd. - Joe Pettersson, Founder & Creative Director, 8-bit - Rob McKinnon, Founder, whoslobbying.com Workshops: - Improving ORG's communication with its members - Methods of online activism - Technical tools ORG can use to highlight campaign issues I felt that I was able to provide useful ideas and information regarding Free Software tools and platforms (such as YaCy, status.net, Appleseed) and also using social media. I agreed to join the ORG-tech mailing list and have since provided feedback on ideas for Free Software that the organisation could use to further their goals and campaigns. Both the Team homepage (http://uk.fsfe.org) and it's identi.ca feed (http://identi.ca/fsfeuk) need more news, and spotting what should be included is a task perfect for our national network of Fellows. If you know of a story that we should 'dent' or write about, please send it immediately to the team mailing list at uk(a)fsfeurope.org and bring it to our attention. You can also contact the editors team (or join it yourself) if you have an outline for an article and get the drafting process started. Unfortunately a couple of important UK stories have passed without FSFE comment recently and I'd really like to prevent that from happening by working together. From now on I shall also send them to this Fellowship list so that those who are interested can gain a better understanding of what FSFE and I are doing in the UK. These reports are not confidential, but I ask that you do not post them publicly without giving me prior notice in case they contain sensitive information. Please feel free to comment on this list on anything that you read in them. I'm keen to improve communication with UK FSFE supporters, and Fellows in particular. [Fellowship-uk] Help to write UK govt. guide for Free Software in the public sector

Please help to write the Government's paper "Open Source Options for Government": http://etherpad.fsfe.org/zaKDgMacMd This paper will be used in the UK public sector to: a. Inform the design of new IT solutions b. Suggest opportunities for IT service or solution refreshes c. Challenge a proposed solution that does not use open source technology The Home Office has asked FSFE to contribute our expertise. Here we a have an opportunity to add compelling evidence for Free Software applications which could influence future UK public sector procurement decisions. In short, the better this paper is, the more likely it is that public money could be spent on using Free rather than proprietary software. FSFE's UK team has already done preliminary work on version 0.1 of the document, but more is needed, particularly details of real world deployments of applications which are already listed, and also Free Software alternatives to dominant proprietary systems in particular fields (medical record management, for example). Its authors at the home office have unfortunately chosen to use Google Docs as the drafting platform, and I don't want to encourage people to register with Google in order to make their contributions. Therefore I have created an FSFE hosted etherpad to collect your input at the address above.<http://etherpad.fsfe.org/zaKDgMacMd> I will later submit the contributions that are made on the etherpad to Tariq Rashid (Lead Architect at the Home Office) so that he can add them to the Google Document. "the French government has locked civil society out of these conversations, while inviting CEOs -- some of whom paid $100,000 for their seat at the table -- who are pushing policies like strict intellectual property enforcement, which will line corporate pockets while curtailing our digital rights."
