Strangely, despite Africa being far less united politically than europe, the choice of a symbol recognisable as meaning africa would be far easier!!
I don't like the map (if russia is in europe, where is Vladivostok?).

No. The twelve stars is the symbol of the European Union. The EU is not universally European (that is, there are significant parts of Europe that are not part of the EU,) nor is the EU universally popular, even in those places that are part of the EU.
Using the EU flag in the FSFE logo will create an association between the FSFE and the EU. The strength of that association will vary depending on where you are. I don't think that it will matter at all that much in Germany, for instance, but in Norway it will be _extremely_ strong. (Norway is not a member of the EU but is most definitely part of Europe. We have had a lot of very lively public debate and a referendum on the issue recently.) People will feel either that the FSFE does not concern them, or will associate it with the so-called `European' movement.
In short, using the EU flag in the FSFE's logo will be widely regarded as a political move, even if not intended. I think that it's a bad idea for the FSFE to get mixed up in political issues that are entirely orthogonal to free software.

Do you think so? How is it with other people in these regions you talked before above? I personally do not connect the Flag with the political movement. I personally do not feel myself as citizen of the European Community but of Europe itself (a real cosmopolitan ;).

I don't know if there are some media specialists part of this mailing list, but I would suggest you print these logos out and also have a look at it from a non-political way but only looking for how it is impressing you.
With the Gnu, the Flag and probably the old (Greek!!) Eurpa we have some symbols wich are making life much easier for us not having to find new ones.

i agree - IMHO it is very important, that a logo is clean, easy to understand and that it is possible to use it on ALL mediatypes not only the web. I would suggest we think about a "first" clean and impressiv logo. If we create one, we could try to add a flag/stars/outlines etc in the back.

thats a point! BUT a logo is very very important. its the first visual impact (eyecatcher/-candy), for people who don't know nothing about our goals. Think about Tux ;-)

No matter what they really stand for: If we have to _explain_ our logo to some people to avoid them getting upset, it is not a good logo.
So for the moment we are left with the map of Europe and the saga of princess Europa and the gnu ... er ... bull. IMHO there are not many more other symbols that have a chance that _all_ Europeans can identify with them.

What about the standard GNU + the word 'Europe' without the stars and the word 'GNU'? ... This may create an immediately understandable link to GNU while underlining the European identity. Also, as it has already been pointed out, it won't, at least directly, give/suggest geographical and political borders and limits. Isn't GNU itself, and all that's related, Philosophy And Mythology ? ;-)

In Asia, there are more countries in more than one continet. Turkey or France, there are some Departements in America which are part of the EU, but there are in America.

The Urals separate Europe from Asia. So Russia is in both.
I still think that normal symbols with an added Europe or something would better. There are way to many symbols in the world anyway..
