Youth Hacking 4 Freedom

Hi all. Today we launched Youth Hacking 4 Freedom: Coding Competition for teenagers To inspire the younger generation to software freedom, the FSFE is organising the coding competition ‘Youth Hacking 4 Freedom' (YH4F), where teenagers from all around Europe have the chance to compete in a fair and fun way. To make this project a success we need your support, to help us reach out to young people. Your contribution is valuable to make sure that young people from your community and region are taking part and have the chance to win an awesome prize and a trip to Brussels. YH4F in a nutshell: * Participants must be 14-18 years old and should register at YH4F website [1]. * The opening event will be hosted on 10 October 2021. * The registration is open until Sunday, 31 October 2021. * Six winners will be awarded with cash prizes (2 x 4.096€, 2 x 2.048€, 2 x 1.024€) and a trip to Brussels. * The competition takes place online. The Award Ceremony is in Brussels. The YH4F competition includes an online opening day to welcome everyone on board, in a kick-off event on Sunday 10 October, 5pm CET. The FSFE will present the competition and answer open questions. Please find more information on how to join at YH4F website [1]. ## Coding >From Monday 1 November 2021, a five-month coding phase starts and the participants focus on coding until March 2022. Participants can bring in all their imagination to the competition; they can code any type of software they want, as long as it is Free Software. The software project can be a stand-alone program written from scratch, or you can modify and combine existing programs. Everything is welcome! The participants will have the chance to briefly follow each other’s work and exchange ideas. ## Evaluation After the participants submit their programs, an evaluation phase is carried out by Free Software experts. Our jury members [2] excel in software development; among them are Neil McGovern, Executive Director of the GNOME Foundation, and Claudia Müller-Birn, Professor for Human-Centered Computing at the Freie Universität Berlin. ## Awards The winners will be invited to receive their awards during a trip to Brussels in June 2022. The 2-day trip includes the Award Ceremony and social activities where the winners will have the chance to get to know each other better. We are dedicated to offering an inclusive environment in the YH4F, and we would like to encourage people of all genders to join! We will make sure that everyone will enjoy the process and will leave this competition with added knowledge and a smile. Mozilla: "We’re taking a break from Facebook"

Hey all, irregardless of the split in our community between privacy pragmatists and privacy absolutists, I think we should take note of this step Mozilla has taken, as I believe FSFE still has a Facebook page (last active on September 21st as far as I can ascertain). > Dear global community we’ve had the opportunity to interact with over the past several years here: > > We’re taking a break from Facebook. > > At Mozilla we champion platforms and technologies that are good for the web and good for the people that use it. > We stand up for transparency and user control because they make the web healthier for us all. > > That’s why we are pressing pause on any Facebook activity. Help with Latvian language for Router Freedom

Dear all, the Latvian Regulator SPRK has invited us for a conference call to discuss the future regulation that will impact Router Freedom. The current information is that the call will happen only in Latvian. Since we don't know yet whether contributions in English will be accepted, we would need some help from a interpreter of Latvian language. The call will happen 24th September 10:00 (GMT+3). Help with translation would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance! Guides/Howtos about how to upstream a feature?

Hi friends of Free Software, just did a small search to see if there are guides out there that explain how to give a change to a Free Software product. Do you know good ones? This would be about * Open a issue or discussion about the feature or fix. * Write up arguments (technical details, what users are interested in) * How to contribute code It should be general (so not specific to a code hosting platform or a Free Software product or community) and if possible from a credible source (one where the potential conflicts of interest are known and one that works mainly by journalistic or scientific standards). Constitution violation with the use of GitHub

As mentioned in https://github.com/fsfe/reuse-tool/issues/361 the use of GitHub for REUSE is to my understanding an obvious violation of the constitution of the Free Software Foundation Europe. Thus i elevate the issue here to be discussed for an appropriate action taken by the FSFE or juridistical authority if sufficient action is not taken by the FSFE. FWIW i support the use of non-free platforms to spread the awareness and reach of Free Software to ensure that the four essential rights are available to as many people as possible so i agree with Mehl's statement in https://github.com/fsfe/reuse-tool/issues/361#issuecomment-855962188, but if FSFE wants to go this way the constitution has to reflect it. -- Jacob "Kreyren" Hrbek Sent with [ProtonMail](https://protonmail.com/) Secure Email.
