Goal for February 14th: More love reports than bug reports! #ilovefs

(If you are reading FSFE's newsletters [1] (and you should when you have not yet given me feedback what I could improve ;) ), and you already use one of our banners [2], you can skip this post because I copied and pasted it. Else please continue.) Let us admit it, the Free Software community is often very critical. Wewrite bug reports, tell others how they can improve the software, ask them fornew features, and to not spare with criticism. Sometimes we forget to say "thank you, for all your work". As in the last years, we want to change this, at least for one day. So on Tuesday the 14th of February we will celebrate the "I love Free Software" - Day [3]. Get active, buy your favourite developer a drink or give them a hug (ask forpermission first), write an e-mail/letter [4] expressing your feelings, create nice pictures, donate to a Free Software initiative, use another of our suggestions [5] or be create yourself to show how you appreciate people, working hard to enlarge or defend our freedom. Beside that help us to promote the activity with our banners [6], by e-mail, (micro)blog or in your (distributed?) social networks. New this year is a whole day event in the Unperfekthaus in Essen (Germany) [7] and that all our Fellows automatically get an login(a)ilovefs.org e-mail alias. So let's make sure that on February 14th there are more love reports, than bug reports! Debate on Free Software at EC

After triggering changes at home [1] recently, basque country officials, free software supporters and free software companies have inyected a proposal [2] about free software releases by the public sector in a EC debate about open data. The rationale -similar to the one that keeps Europe free of software patents - relies on the idea that software is yet another information format. For the moment, most of the comments are originated in Spain. It would be great to have tons of comments from other parts of Europe supporting the innitiative. Please, help spread the word. Free Radio and Free Software

Dear list, my name is Nils Brock. I have been working at the interface between free radio and free software during the last years. I would like to know if anybody on this list is also working conceptually or practically on the production, streaming and digital transmission of radio based on free software. Personally I will be working with free and community media during the next years in Brazil. It would be nice to get in touch with people working on similar topics in Europe. Petition to free Stuxnet/Duqu/Flame trojan code under GPL

Seems they used the LZO library, which is straight-up GPL. http://www.oberhumer.com/opensource/lzo/ And so, someone has asked them to release the code under the GPL. http://blog.crysys.hu/2012/06/stuxnet-duqu-flame-open-source-license-questi… Other code uses various permissive licenses. As works of the US federal government, the rest is of course public domain. *splutter* So does the author of LZO want to send the US government a GPL notification? Perhaps the SFLC can help ... - d.

Analysis on Secure Boot / Restricted Boot

I just published an analysis on "Secure Boot": https://fsfe.org/campaigns/generalpurposecomputing/secure-boot-analysis.en.… FSFE's goal is to ensure that the owners of IT devices are always in full and sole control of them. This fundamental principle is recently being challenged. With a function called "Secure Boot", which will be deployed in computers starting 2012, manufacturers of IT hardware and software components are striving to get into a position where they permanently control the IT devices they produce. Hence such devices will be "secure" from the manufacturer's perspective, but not necessarily from the owner's point of view: The owner can be treated as an adversary. By preventing uses of the device which the manufacturer does not intend, they can control and limit what a general purpose IT machine (e.g. a PC, laptop, netbook) may be used for. In case of IT devices with internet access, they can alter these usage restrictions at any time without even informing the device owner. As a result, IT manufacturers at their will can take away common rights owners of products usually receive.
