Wilhelmtux to stand for Open Standards and Free Software in
Switzerland.
Last Thursday, June 6th, members of the LUGs of Murten[1],
Berne[2],Fribourg[3] and Basel [5], as well as people with
interest in Free Software and lobbying, got together to formally
found what is
to become a lobbying group for Free Software and Open Standards.
About 20 people, most of them with an IT background, assembled to
found Wilhelmtux[4]. The goal of the exercise ia to raise
awareness for Free Software and to promote the use of it mostly
within the Swiss Government, and the Swiss Administration.
A public discussion much like those already under way in other
european countries, is to be started. This discussion should
allow a critical approach towards Software development and point
out the shortcomings of Closed Source/Proprietary Software.
Two delegations left for Linuxtag in order to talk to
organisators of Bundestux in Germany (a source of inspiration),
and to members of FSF Europe and to spread the news to other
organisations present at the conference.
Since the group focuses mainly on swiss interests, the website
[4] is available in the official languages of Switzerland. An
english version is not planned at the moment.

involved in the organisation are fluent in english.

Much of the actual work in the implementation of SELinux was done by
Secure Computing Corporation (SCC). SCC, in its implementation of
SELinux, used a technology that it calls type enforcement. As it
turns out, SCC has a patent on this technology.

Recently, this page has been removed from the SCC web site -
a move which should be of concern to anybody who is relying on
web-based promises about access to patented technology.

So, SCC may eventually do the right thing (from the free
software community's point of view) and preserve the free licensing
of SELinux.

of threat that software patents pose to free software.

This change made it into the law in the original form suggested by the
ifrOSS and became part of the law passed on 25.1.2002 that will be
enacted soon.
Does someone know where I can find more information on this
subject ? I never heard about these problems and the proposed solution
so far and I'd like to learn more.

than the anglo-american Copyright, the FSF Europe has also been

I'd like to get more information on this new subject. I wonder
why continental-European Authorship law implies that it is necessary
to work on a copyright assignment to the FSF Europe. I've been happy to
sign copyright assignments to the FSF in the past and will continue to
do so in the future.
Are there compelling reasons to have copyright assigned to FSF
Europe instead of FSF ?
