Hi all,
Below you find the "RC1" version of the media release, including all
your comments and feedback, cleaned up a little and mixed the comments a
bit more to have a community lead-in with corporate voices joining in in
order to emphasis a bit more the community aspect of the Document
Freedom Day.
I hope this version is acceptable for everyone now and unless there is
something major I missed, I will send this version out over the DFD and
FSFE media lists in approximately 30 minutes.
Best regards,
Georg

Introducing Document Freedom Day
26 March: A global day for document liberation
Sign up your DFD team today!
The Document Freedom Day (DFD) is a global day for Document Liberation
with grassroots action for promotion of Free Document Formats and Open
Standards in general. The DFD was initiated and is supported by a
group of organisations and companies, including, but not limited to,
IBM, Red Hat and Sun Microsystems, Inc., the Free Software Foundation
Europe, ODF Alliance, OpenForum Europe and Stichting NLnet.
On 26 March 2008, the Document Freedom Day will provide a global
rallying point for Document Liberation and Open Standards. It will
literally give teams around the world the chance to "hoist the flag":
A "DFD Starter Pack" containing a flag, t-shirt, leaflets and stickers
is in preparation and is planned to be sent out in the first weeks of
March to the first 100 teams that sign up. Fifteen teams already
signed up during the preparation phase of the DFD prior to this
release. Sign your team up now!
"We're proud to support this global effort to encourage open and
inclusive information exchange," said Marino Marcich, Managing
Director, OpenDocument Format Alliance. "Document freedom means
creating, exchanging, and preserving your electronic documents without
having to buy software from a particular vendor."
"Data lock-in and subsequent vendor lock-in are some of the most
severe issues users are facing today," says FSFE president Georg
Greve. "Yet most people only realise this connection when it is too
late and they have effectively lost control over their own data. We
are supporting the Document Freedom Day to help raise awareness for
this issue by starting with something that affects pretty much all
users of computers: text documents, spreadsheets and presentations."
"Free document formats and open standards are important elements in
the continued expansion of the global open source community," said Tom
Rabon, executive vice president, Corporate Affairs at Red Hat. "Red
Hat strongly supports Document Freedom Day and encourages
participation by all who look forward to the day when documents are
controlled by those who own them, not necessarily by those who create
the technology to access those documents."
Simon Phipps, Chief Open Source Officer, Sun Microsystems stated, "As
I explained in my paper "Freedom to Leave" [*], it's fundamental in
the emerging market for people to be free to use any software they
desire to handle their data. I fully support the goals of Document
Freedom." [*] http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dhb29vwq_3dzb2cs
Alexandre Oliva of the Free Software Foundation Latin America (FSFLA)
comments: "When you save your documents using a Free Open Standard
format such as ODF, you're also saving your own future, ensuring your
continued ability to access, decode and convert their contents."
Graham Taylor Director of OpenForum Europe: "OpenForum Europe applauds
the announcement of Document Freedom Day. The whole essence of
'openness' is captured by the right of users, citizens,
governments... to be able to freely access and exchange documents
today and in the future. Nothing gives greater meaning to the
prevalent danger of lock-in to proprietary solutions, and for the need
for Government to act now."

The Document Freedom Day - global day for document liberation
We are happy to announce world-wide initiative for Open Standards -
Document Freedom Day (DFD). Document Freedom Day[1] will focus on Open
Standards[2] in the filed of document formats by making global community
gathered over the benefits of freedom, openness, accessibility and
interoperability.
DFD's main goals are:
* promotion and adoption of free document formats
* making global network
* coordination of activities that happen on 26th of March, Document
Freedom Day
Once in a year, on the last Wednesday in the March, community all over
the globe will celebrate Document Freedom Day. 2008 is the first year
that the Document Freedom Day is being called for, and we are looking
for people around the world who are willing to join the effort.
The best way for everyone to join this effort is by forming[3] a DFD
team[4] or joining existing one[5]. DFD teams will be the foundation of
the community, producing global impact by local activities. We will
gather all the information about their activities on our website and
present them to the public.
Between those days, DFD will be focused on facilitating community action
and building awareness for issues of Document Freedom and Open Standards.
Document Freedom Day is a joint effort[6], initiated and supported by
several organizations and companies.
If you have any further questions please feel free to contact us. If you
like, our media mailing list[7] is available for you, so feel free to
register or let us know if you want us to do that for you.
Kind regards,
Ivan Jelic

What everyone should know about DRM (http://DRM.info)
Hi all,
the Document Freedom Day web site is now usable and with seeding
content. Ivan was so kind to provide an overview of the work done on
the site so far, which I'm attaching to the bottom of this mail.
We need more outreach now.
I have started informing people about DFD, we've started letting
people in the FSFE circles and teams know, and the first people have
already declared that they will organise teams. We're also moving
beyond FSFE now to get a wider circle involved - including the SFD,
which has also received a notice about plans, but which has not
responded so far.
Could everyone else please also give an overview of where the word has
been spread so we have an idea of where we need more coverage?
Next steps.
Plans for the DFD itself are becoming more concrete, as well. An idea
that was brought up was one of creating "DFD Starter Packs" that will
enable local communities to get better output and media coverage while
serving as a motivator, since they can keep the materials - and reuse
them the next year.
Components of the DFD Starter Pack we considered are:
* 1x Document Freedom Day Flag
FSFE has good experience with its Fellowship flags, which are
real flags from a professional store and can be hoisted as well
as carried around and so on and so forth. They also help to
make very nice pictures, see [1,2].
So we were considering to do Document Freedom flags, which
would be blue with the ODF Dove in white.
[1] http://www.fsfe.org/en/fellows/greve/img/zrh_hoist
[2] http://drm.info/en/img/20061003-zrh-014
* 3x Document Freedom Day T-Shirt (additional shirts for payment)
Blue shirts with ODF Logo + "Liberate your Documents" on the
back and the URL of the Document Freedom Day, maybe with an
additional "DFD '08" so we can do different shirts every year
and they will ideally become collector's items.
* 20x Document Freedom Day stickers.
We need a good slogan for this, maybe along the lines of:
"My documents are free. Are yours?"
* 100x Document Freedom Information Leaflets
A basic leaflet in English on the values of Document Freedom.
We could also consider doing a basic layout that can be
professionally printed without text - so people can then use
any normal laser printer to print the information leaflets in
their local language themselves.
The FSFE office in Düsseldorf can take care of most of the logistics
of this, but we do not have the financial means - so if we decide that
we want to do this, we need commitment from sponsors.
Based on our experience with other items, FSFE's office has done a
rough estimation to get an idea what such a pack would cost, and all
things considered, doing 100 packs would come at ~85 EUR per pack, so
we are looking at 8500 EUR total.
Unfortunately there is not a lot of time to decide, the flags have
delivery times of about three weeks, so if we order Monday next week,
we could start sending out the packs from 3 March, which is still just
in time, but we cannot wait very much.
Commitments, comments, suggestions and ideas are welcome.
Best regards,
Georg, Ivan and Marko

Hello,
It is time for us to start thinking about press releases for the 20th.
IMO, we might have two ones, for the IT and non-IT medias. Wat do you
think about that?
